Chairman, Bench
The cultural advocate and brand purveyor redefining the country’s retail landscape
Since founding Bench in 1987, Ben Chan has transformed a modest T-shirt line into one of the Philippines’ most recognisable lifestyle empires. Guided by his passions for design and country, he has built a brand that celebrates Filipino creativity while maintaining global appeal. Under his leadership, Suyen Corporation’s portfolio has expanded far beyond fashion, encompassing beauty, homeware, food, furniture, and even real estate—each venture reflecting his vision of “good design at good prices.”
Over nearly four decades, Chan has continued to evolve Bench’s presence and influence. In the past two years alone, he has amplified Filipino talent through platforms such as Bench Fashion Week, Ternocon and an ongoing partnership with Tokyo Fashion Week—pushing local designers to international stages. His commitment to nurturing homegrown creativity remains steadfast, with initiatives like the Bench Design Awards serving as a launchpad for new voices in fashion.
Always forward-looking, Chan continues to innovate across the lifestyle space. In 2025, he unveiled new ventures including a soon-to-open cafe, expansions into the beauty and wellness categories, and the introduction of new global brands to the local market. Beyond business, he is preparing to publish a yet-to-be-titled book celebrating Philippine culture for a global readership—a testament to his lifelong advocacy of design with a national soul.
“E-commerce provides an equal platform of opportunity for the industry, whether for a small home-based enterprise or an international brand. However, this has also made the platform highly competitive.”

Did You Know?
Chan made hand sanitisers a thing for Filipinos way before the pandemic. His signature Bench Alcogel was launched in 1998 as gel-form of rubbing alcohol, which Filipinos were already toting around, but made trendier. This paved the way for the development of Bench Laboratory and an entire expansion into personal care products.
