Hong Kong’s new pensions chief Ayesha Macpherson Lau brings decades of accountancy experience to the role

Appointed chairman in 2021 of the Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes Authority, the statutory body that operates the Hong Kong government pension fund scheme, Ayesha Macpherson Lau has been a non-executive director of the authority since 2017.

Before joining the organisation full time, she was a partner at KPMG China and a managing partner of KPMG Hong Kong. A specialist in taxation, she is also a member of several Hong Kong Monetary Authority committees, a director of the Hong Kong Academy of Finance, a council member of the University of Hong Kong, and a member of the Legal Aid Services Council, and also had official roles at organisations including the Financial Reporting Council, the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, the Independent Commission Against Corruption, and the Harbourfront Commission.

An accounting advisor of the Ministry of Finance of the People’s Republic of China, she is also a member of Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference and a JP. She is married to former Chinese University of Hong Kong vice chancellor and Executive Council member Lawrence Lau.
