Aw Kah Peng

Senior Vice President and Chairman, Global Chemical Ventures and Shell Companies in Singapore

Tatler Asia

A navigator to a more sustainable future, leading Shell’s mission to be a net-zero emissions energy business by 2050

Aw Kah Peng has been the Chairman of Shell Companies in Singapore since January 2019, driving energy transition in the country. Since 2024, Aw has also taken on the additional role of senior vice president, Global Chemical Ventures. Her leadership emphasises collaboration with stakeholders to drive meaningful change in energy practices across Asia.

Prior to joining Shell, Aw had a successful 22-year career in the Singapore public service. She worked at the Economic Development Board across a range of industries and geographies in the US and Europe, before she was appointed as chief executive officer of the Singapore Tourism Board. Throughout her career, she has played a key role in a wide range of developments, such as Jurong Island, Integrated Resorts and the F1 night race.

At Shell, Aw champions the use of scenario analysis to help senior management anticipate and navigate long-term challenges in the energy system. Scenarios are an exploration of how the world could evolve under different sets of assumptions regarding technology, geopolitics, and social trends. For example, when Shell published The Energy Security Scenarios in March 2023, the world was focused on high energy prices, yet the emergence of technologies like ChatGPT—barely the tip of the Artificial Intelligence (AI) iceberg—necessitated a fresh look at the future.

This led to The 2025 Energy Security Scenarios: Energy and artificial intelligence, which reimagines the original Archipelagos and Horizon narratives in the context of a world using AI. A third scenario, Surge, was added to explore a new wave of economic growth driven by productivity improvements catalysed by AI. While the Archipelagos scenario shows technology development hampered by global concerns, Horizon takes a normative approach to investigate what the world needs to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. These scenarios serve as a key input into Shell’s strategy, though they are not an expression of its business plan. Aw is a fellow of MIT’s Sloan School of Management and a founding member of the Philip Yeo Initiative.
