Arin Dwihartanto Sunaryo

Painter

Tatler Asia

Volcanic dust and glossy resin are the distinctive features of Arin’s most famous series “The Volcanic Ash Series”. The ash was collected a year after the 2010 eruption of Mt. Merapi, with Arin expressing his desire to “preserve the materials, movement of resin, color and ideas, and the relationship they have with each other”. Unsurprisingly, his vibrant multi-layered paintings have fetched as much as US$72,514 at auction. His experimental techniques with the fluid resin have also led him to realize the scraps as sculptures. His work has been featured at the Guggenheim Museum’s “No Country: Contemporary Art for South and Southeast Asia” exhibition in 2013, the only Indonesian artist to have done so. Arin studied Fine Arts at Bandung Institute of Technology in Indonesia (2001), and earned an MFA from Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London (2015). Recent solo exhibitions include “After Taste” Sullivan+Strumpf, Sydney, Australia (2017). Using materials that included instant noodle and chili powder, it was Arin’s attempt to “expand his artistic practice into an enquiry of pan-sensual experience”. Sunaryo's group exhibitions include Art Basel, Hong Kong (2016).
