The Masungi Georeserve co-founder fosters conservation through ecotourism and advocacy

Ann Dumaliang, managing trustee of Masungi Georeserve and a National Geographic Explorer, brings expertise and dedication to preserving the Philippines’ unique landscapes. Together with her sister, Billie Dumaliang, Ann has transformed Masungi into a biodiversity sanctuary, leading a private conservation project focused on sustainable reforestation, ecotourism, and community involvement. Under her leadership, Masungi has restored over 3,000 hectares of degraded land, becoming a model for ecotourism that harmonises with environmental protection.

Beyond conservation, Dumaliang champions biodiversity and advocates for environmental defenders, facing serious threats, including harassment from armed groups and violence against her rangers. Her commitment endures, and she shares her insights globally, speaking at platforms like the World Economic Forum on the need to protect biodiversity hotspots like Masungi, which are vital for sustaining clean water systems for local communities.

Dumaliang’s work has earned her global acclaim, including recognition as an Ashoka Fellow and awards for sustainable development. Her advocacy includes empowering local communities and youth through environmental education, cultivating the next generation of land stewards. Her efforts not only ensure Masungi's survival but also highlight the profound impact of private conservation on global environmental awareness.
