Maximalist creator and go-to dressmaker for royalty, high society and celebrities

Few Singaporean fashion designers have exerted an influence on the global arena as much as Andrew Gn. Paris-based Gn’s creations seamlessly blend avant-garde design with high-end craftsmanship, nuanced with cultural references that extend well beyond his Chinese-Japanese heritage.

This has earned him a solid reputation among the world’s most powerful and fashionable women––the likes of Jordan’s Queen Rania, Denmark’s Princess Mary, Maggie Cheung, Kareena Kapoor, Lady Gaga and Lily Collins.

For Gn, 2023 was an especially significant year. In May, Singapore’s Asian Civilisations Museum (ACM) staged a blockbuster retrospective of the designer’s three-decade-long career, thanks to Gn’s generous donation of 112 archival garments.

Andrew Gn: Fashioning Singapore and the World, which ran for four months, showcased iconic pieces ranging from Emma Stone’s white lace dress worn in La La Land to a hot pink silk satin gown customised for Beyoncé. A second version of an emerald-green ensemble that Kate Middleton, Princess of Wales wore in June 2023 was also on display.

The largest exhibition ever to celebrate a Singapore fashion designer, the collection serves as the cornerstone for the museum’s contemporary fashion exhibits, ensuring that Gn’s artistic legacy will be accessible to future generations.

Gn trained at the elite Central Saint Martins School of Art and Design in London and Domus Academy in Milan before starting his eponymous label in 1996.

“[Fashion is] a marathon: if you want to come into fashion, be prepared to give 200 per cent of yourself. You manage your talent, you hold your breath—and you run that marathon.”
