A sportsman and long-time corporate executive, Al Panlilio was appointed as the new president and CEO of PLDT

When former PLDT head honcho Manny V Pangilinan hang up his jersey after 23 years, Al Panlilio stepped in as its president and CEO. He has been with the MVP group of companies since 1999, starting as a senior vice president in the Corporate Business Group before taking the lead at the telco’s Carrier Business Group. He spent a few years in Meralco and most recently, grew the business of mobile phone Smart. It bodes well that he is a team player, since the conglomerate has over 16,000 employees.

Panlilio is also the president of the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas, first vice president of the Philippine Olympic Committee and president of the MVP Sports Foundation. As a sportsman himself, he has used his position to support Filipino athletes through the pandemic. Panlilio ensured the representatives of the 31st Southeast Asian Games were vaccinated against Covid-19 before leaving for Vietnam.

For his next couple of moves, Panlilio is on top of PLDT’s investment into a hyperscaler data centre that is more powerful than the telco’s 10 existing sites across the country. With users increasing their time on their mobile phones, previous initiatives in remittance services and improved connectivity are getting the focus and attention that they need to win through this pandemic.
