Could your child’s best education lie beyond the classroom?

I first heard the word “worldschooling” on a dive boat in Thailand, of all places. There I was, bobbing about in the Andaman Sea, when I struck up a conversation with a fellow diver from Belgium and his 10-year-old son. They’d been travelling through Asia for months, so when asked if the boy was missing school, his father mentioned they were “worldschooling” him—teaching him about the cultures of the world in ways that traditional school education simply couldn’t offer. I thought it sounded rather brilliant.

That chance encounter introduced me to a movement that’s been quietly gaining momentum for years and has exploded since the pandemic.

Chow Tai Fook debuted its latest high jewellery collection, Timeless Harmony, at Hangzhou’s West Lake. But this was no ordinary launch—it was an exemplar of how cultural heritage can be honoured without resorting to cliché.

Rather than relying on overt Chinese cultural symbols such as dragons or phoenixes, Chow Tai Fook’s creative director of high jewellery, Nicholas Lieou, crafted something far more nuanced. The Hong Kong-born jewellery designer presented a seven-part collection that draws inspiration from Chinese philosophy and architecture, translating concepts such as stillness, balance and structural harmony into wearable art.

At the tenth edition of Asia’s 50 Best Bars’ annual awards ceremony, Hong Kong’s Bar Leone was crowned Best Bar in Asia on July 15. The unmistakably Italian bar has maintained its position at the top spot since it made the 50 Best Bars’ history at the 2024 awards, where it claimed the top spot as a new entrant on the list. This year, bartending luminaries and startenders alike gather to toast in celebration of the region’s bartending talent at the opulent Wynn Palace in Macau, which will likely continue to host next year’s Asia’s 50 Best Bars awards.

The Nepalese feature Shambhala is a dark horse that has been making waves on the global film scene. It garnered nominations at three major events: the Golden Horse Award for Best Cinematography last year; the Best International Feature Film category at the Oscars in March this year; and the Golden Bear Award at the Berlin International Film Festival, making it the first Nepalese film to receive such a nomination.

The meditative, scenic feature, set in the Himalayas, follows the story of Pema, a young woman in a polyandrous marriage, who embarks on a quest to find her missing husband and ultimately discovers self-worth and spiritual awakening.
