Inside the Hermès fashion show in Hong Kong

The evening of September 19 marked a historic moment for Hong Kong as Hermès staged its autumn-winter 2025 menswear show at Kai Tak Cruise Terminal. Ready, Set, Casaque! proved that the city remains very much at the epicentre of luxury’s global conversation.

Against the glittering backdrop of Victoria Harbour, the men’s artistic director since 1988, Véronique Nichanian’s vision for the men’s collection unfolded with architectural precision. The casaque – those traditional racing silks so integral to Hermès’ equestrian heritage – became the evening’s protagonist, as cream, blood orange and celadon blue swept across the concrete expanse of Kai Tak.

The bassline is low, the sun is still high, and the room hums with the peculiar alchemy of caffeine and that breathless pause before the beat drops. At a Social Club Series “coffee rave”, part of Hong Kong’s growing soft-clubbing scene, alcohol is nowhere in sight. Instead, perhaps a piccolo latte; on other days, it might be a slice of pizza, a cup of tea or a scoop of gelato. Nobody orders a round of shots—and nobody seems to miss them.

It’s part of a wider shift sweeping Asia-Pacific. According to Canada- and India-based market intelligence firm Precedence Research, the region’s non-alcoholic drinks sector is already worth more than US$480 billion and is projected to double by 2034. California-headquartered Grand View Research forecasts that ready-to-drink mocktails in Asia-Pacific will grow by 6.5 per cent a year through 2030. Meanwhile, global market analyst Euromonitor International notes that East Asian consumers, especially younger ones, are cutting back for health, clarity and the simple pleasure of waking up without regret.

Swiss art collector Uli Sigg doesn’t like to draw attention to himself. On September 4, M+, the city’s museum of visual culture, held a media tour of the new Sigg Collection exhibition, which was promoted in the invitation as “led by Dr Uli Sigg” alongside M+’s Sigg curator Dr Wu Mo. But Sigg stood quietly among the journalists and left the tour to Mo; occasionally the latter would call out to ask Sigg if he wanted to say something about his collection—he’d either give a concise reply or a gentle head shake and a smile.

This quiet personality comes as a surprise given his public image. He’s something of a celebrity in the fields of both politics and art: he was Swiss ambassador to China during the latter nation’s reform and opening up in the 1990s, having first travelled and lived there in the 1970s for business; meanwhile, he is the world’s most prominent collector of contemporary Chinese art.
