Time to shine

When action thriller Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In premiered in Hong Kong on May 1, it grossed a robust HK$5 million and became the second-highest-grossing local movie on its opening day in Hong Kong cinema history. Tatler caught up with Hong Kong Film Awards winner Soi Cheang to talk about the film’s creative direction, and how he recreated Kowloon Walled City.

May is celebrating Asian cinema on every one of its 31 days, whether that’s local or global recognition: as well as the premiere of Cheang’s movie, Ray Cheung’s latest LGBTQ+ movie All Shall Be Well is now in cinemas; it is already regarded as a worthy successor to his 2019 release Suk Suk; and then, of course, the Cannes Film Festival is highlighting some of the region’s talents on its screen and its red carpet.
