Familiar faces
Even if you haven’t heard of father of Hong Kong design Henry Steiner, you’ve certainly seen his work—it is everywhere in this city: from the HSBC hexagon, the Hong Kong Land “H” and the Jockey Club logo to the emblem on Standard Chartered banknotes. The Austrian graphic designer sat down with Tatler ahead of the opening of his retrospective exhibition at M+ to talk about how his legacy and that of the city are inextricably linked.
Some faces are indeed intrinsically connected to the story of a city or of an institution. In Hong Kong, bar veteran Beckaly Franks’s image was inseparable from The Pontiac before she announced her departure earlier this week . In New York City next week, all eyes will be on Anna Wintour and this year’s edition of the Met Gala. And sometimes, it’s less a face than a personality that resonates: the perseverance of artists like Warrior actor Jason Tobin More than bringing comfort, the perseverance of these personalities have inspired a new generation to come disrupt the status-quo of their own industry, just like who wants to create a new legacy for martial artists in cinema.
