Switch up your workout routine by trying a pilates class or two at these boutique studios
Made a New Year’s resolution to start working out more but find it hard to head to the gym? Substitute the cardio machines and free weights with a reformer machine to get yourself motivated again.
Loved for its low-intensity body conditioning approach, pilates has grown a cult following since it was first developed in the early 20th century by Joseph Pilates—and for good reason. On top of getting a sweat, pilates is known to help strengthen and stabilise your core, allowing you to improve posture, flexibility and mobility.
A study titled ‘Physical and psychological benefits of once-a-week pilates exercises in young sedentary women: A 10-week longitudinal study’ examined the effects of pilates training in young, healthy and sedentary women. The results showed that the pilates group exhibited various positive effects, including improvements in flexibility, balance, abdominal muscle strength and body awareness. “Only once a week pilates training is enough to trigger detectable benefits in young sedentary women,” the study concludes.
Pilates himself says it best: “In 10 sessions you’ll feel the difference, in 20 you’ll see the difference, and in 30 you’ll have a new body.” So, start reaping the benefits of pilates by signing up at one of the many boutique studios in Singapore. Here are some to get you started.
