38 per cent of Malaysians suffer from poor quality of sleep; The BP Sleep Centre aims to address this and raise awareness about the treatment options for obstructive sleep apnea

Sleep is a fundamental aspect of our day-to-day health, yet it is often left overlooked or underestimated amidst our busy, modern lifestyles. Many Malaysians suffer from a poor quality of sleep and remain undiagnosed for sleep disorders that significantly affect their quality of life. In fact, around 90 per cent of people with sleep issues around the world remain undiagnosed and untreated.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is a common sleep disorder characterised by repeated interruptions in breathing during sleep. Untreated OSA can have serious consequences, including increased risk for lower testosterone, lower sexual health and performance, hypertension, heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and depression. With symptoms ranging from daytime fatigue, restless sleep, waking up to choke or gasp in the night, and loud snoring, OSA is a common sleep disorder that many are not aware of. Yet, it affects so many people and their relationships with their partners and families, from young people to seniors.

A sleep study is a crucial tool for diagnosing OSA and determining the appropriate treatment plan. By prioritising sleep and addressing obstructive sleep apnea, individuals can significantly improve their overall well-being and quality of life.

With 50 centres across the nation, The BP Sleep Centre aims to tackle the symptoms of OSA with a comprehensive sleep analysis or sleep study carried out by medical professionals. Getting a sleep diagnosis is easier and more accessible than ever with The BP Sleep Centre. Those who want to learn whether or not they have sleep apnea are recommended to fill out a sleep questionnaire, which is followed by a sleep study that can be conducted in the comfort of their own beds via the home sleep study.

The home sleep study carried out by the BP Sleep Centre utilises a high-quality device which gathers data while you sleep. It offers a customised sleep report the next day, explained in detail by BP Healthcare’s medical practitioner.

The sleep study is an important step in understanding how OSA affects your life and what you can do to treat or abate it.

CrossFit athlete, personal trainer and coach Akid Mohd Naj Muddin didn’t immediately recognise the effects of obstructive sleep apnea in his own life despite experiencing snoring at night, poor quality of sleep and constant fatigue. After getting a hospital check-up, Akid was told he had a rare case of tongue weakness, resulting in the tongue collapsing during sleep and affecting breathing.

“The doctor was quite surprised, they said usually people with health issues or obesity experience sleep apnea. But I do sports and I have had it for the longest time. Growing up with it, awareness of the condition was very low,” says Akid, who was encouraged to do a sleep study before seeing a doctor. The results of the study were a shock to Akid initially.

“It turns out that in one hour, I stopped breathing 19 times,” he says. “I felt like that was a lot. I'm always tired, to the point of falling asleep at a traffic light or falling asleep while standing up. I can’t imagine it being worse for some people.”

After the sleep study, Akid started on a recommended treatment in the form of the BP CPAP (continuous positive air pressure) device, designed to facilitate better airflow and improve one’s quality of sleep.

After using the device, Akid could sleep more soundly, feeling more rested and refreshed even after just four hours of sleep. The user-friendly and portable device comes in a set that includes a face mask, tube, filters and a humidifier chamber with adjustable humidity settings to help counter nose and throat dryness during sleep.
