Cancer has long been one of the country’s most formidable health challenges, often requiring prolonged, physically demanding treatment. For many Filipino patients, the burden extends beyond illness, encompassing travel, cost and time away from work and family.
Now, advances in radiation oncology are changing that narrative.
“The CyberKnife system represents a landmark breakthrough in radiation oncology—elevating cancer treatment through extraordinary precision, intelligent image guidance and a level of technological refinement once thought unattainable,” says Dr Michael Martin Malabanan, a radiation oncologist at the Asian Hospital and Medical Center, the only facility in the Philippines with this technology.
Unlike traditional radiotherapy, which can take weeks, this system enables doctors to deliver highly targeted radiation in far fewer sessions. In some cases, treatment that once required nearly 40 visits can now be completed in just five.
More remarkably, the technology adapts to the body in real time. “By synchronising the radiation beam with a patient’s natural breathing motion, physicians can now treat moving targets—such as lung tumours—with extraordinary precision,” he explains.
This is particularly relevant in the Philippines, where reducing hospital visits can significantly ease the burden on patients. The precision also means fewer side effects. “It offers a safer, more refined treatment experience—minimising side effects while preserving quality of life.”
Yet beyond machines, Dr Malabanan emphasises a broader philosophy. “True transformation in health rarely comes from dramatic breakthroughs, but from disciplined, intentional living.” In a country where late-stage diagnoses remain common, prevention and lifestyle remain critical pillars of care.

Diabetes Shift
If cancer is a visible battle, diabetes is a silent epidemic. Nearly five million Filipinos live with the condition, many undiagnosed until complications arise.
But a wave of innovation is reshaping how diabetes is understood and managed.
“We are now in the era of metabolic reprogramming therapy—addressing the primary drivers of diabetes, which are obesity and insulin resistance,” says Dr Rowena E Ejercito-De Jesus, an endocrinologist and head of St Luke’s Wellness Center at St Luke’s Medical Center - BGC and QC.
New medications such as semaglutide and tirzepatide are leading this shift. Beyond controlling blood sugar, they promote weight loss and reduce cardiovascular risk, offering a more holistic approach to treatment.
Technology is also playing a transformative role. Continuous glucose monitors, or CGMs, are replacing traditional finger-prick testing with real-time tracking.
“CGMs allow the patient to keep an eye on their blood glucose level in real time, continuously, without the painful and tedious finger-prick testing,” she explains.
These devices do more than monitor; they predict. With AI integration, patients receive alerts before glucose levels become dangerous, enabling faster, more informed decisions.

Dr Jimmy Aragon, an endocrinology specialist and chief of the endocrinology section at the Makati Medical Center, sees this as a behavioural breakthrough as much as a medical one. “CGMs are game-changers. The goal is not only to monitor their glucose patterns but also to implement habit changes, such as food choices and exercise timing.”
The impact on outcomes is significant. “By being more aware of their glucose fluctuations, Filipinos are expected to benefit by lowering their A1C by 1 per cent,” Dr Aragon notes, underscoring how even small improvements can reduce complications and healthcare costs.
Yet accessibility remains a pressing issue. Advanced devices and medications are often expensive and not broadly covered by insurance. As Dr De Jesus points out, “They are still not widely available to the ordinary Filipino.”
Still, there is momentum. Telemedicine and mobile health platforms are expanding reach, particularly in underserved areas. “This is now the era of diabetes management, with a transformation from reactive to proactive, patient-centred, data-driven care,” she adds.

Cardiac Innovation
Heart disease remains a leading cause of death in the Philippines, with heart attacks often striking suddenly and without warning. Historically, treatment outcomes depended heavily on speed and access.
Today, new technologies are improving both.
“The use of imaging has been one of the most important innovations in percutaneous interventions,” says Dr Francis Solomon Claridades, an interventional cardiologist and a board-certified Adult Cardiologist of the Philippine College of Cardiology.
Tools such as intravascular ultrasound and optical coherence tomography allow doctors to see inside coronary arteries during procedures, ensuring stents are precisely placed and reducing complications.
For hardened arteries, newer devices are expanding treatment options. “Shockwave Intravascular Lithotripsy and Orbital Atherectomy have been made available here in the Philippines to help give interventional cardiologists more tools in dealing with calcified plaques,” he explains.
Wearable technology is also making an impact. Smartwatches can detect irregular heart rhythms, prompting early consultation. While not a replacement for clinical tools, they offer a widely accessible first step in prevention.
AI is beginning to assist with diagnosis as well. “AI is now being used to help read ECGs [electrocardiogram] with increasing accuracy,” Dr Claridades notes, pointing to a future where early detection becomes faster and more reliable.
Perhaps most significant is the growing accessibility of treatment. Expanded financial coverage for heart attack interventions is making life-saving procedures more attainable for Filipinos.
Meanwhile, robotic-assisted procedures are pushing the boundaries of care. These minimally invasive techniques reduce recovery time and physical trauma—though cost remains a barrier. “They tend to be more expensive due to the complexity and the equipment used,” he says candidly.

Future Care
Across these fields, a common thread emerges: healthcare is becoming more precise, more predictive and more personalised.
From radiation beams that track moving tumours to glucose sensors that anticipate metabolic changes, the focus is shifting from reaction to prevention. Patients are no longer passive recipients of care—they are active participants, empowered by data and technology.
Yet the Philippine context adds a crucial dimension. Innovation must be matched by accessibility. High costs, limited insurance coverage and unequal distribution of specialists remain significant hurdles.
Still, there is cautious optimism. Government initiatives, digital platforms and growing awareness are helping to bridge the gap. As these technologies become more widespread, they have the potential to transform not only outcomes but the entire experience of healthcare.
In the end, these breakthroughs are not just about machines or medicine. They are about giving Filipinos more time, a better quality of life and, ultimately, greater control over their health.
