Initially built as a simple hunting lodge, the Château de Versailles was home to the court of Louis XIV from 1682, effectively becoming the French capital until 1789. It has captivated visitors from around the world with its stunning architecture and lush gardens, not to mention its rich history and the wealth of treasures waiting to be discovered.

The palace was one of the first French sites to be awarded Unesco World Heritage status, in 1979. It contains 2,300 rooms spread over 680,000 sq ft; at the heart of the complex are the Royal Apartments, where kings and queens held court in majestic splendour.

The breathtaking Hall of Mirrors, with its Instagram-worthy, mirror-lined galleries that look out to the royal gardens, remains a highlight, while the Royal Opera, which had an extensive renovation and reopened its doors in 2009, showcases diverse operatic masterpieces and concerts every month. Outside, visitors can enjoy the meticulously landscaped grounds dotted with a symphony of statues, fountains and ornamental gardens.

At the venue:
Equestrian (July 27-August 6)
Modern Pentathlon (August 8-11)
