A step back in time

Spain is steeped in history and the Greater Madrid Region embodies the country’s cultural richness with an impressive host of Unesco heritage sites. These architectural wonders beckon history buffs to step back in time and immerse themselves in the rich narratives of Madrid’s past.

Commissioned by King Philip II in the mid-sixteenth century, the Monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial is regarded as one of the eighth wonders of the Old World, and for good reason. Arguably a marvel of Renaissance architecture, San Lorenzo de El Escorial combines a royal palace, library, monastery, and mausoleum in one sprawling complex—so be sure to set aside a whole day to thoroughly explore and immerse yourself in all its grandeur.

Alcalá de Henares is the birthplace of the literary giant Miguel de Cervantes and is a must-visit for literature enthusiasts. Stop by the town’s university (one of the oldest in Europe), as well as the charming streets and squares of the historic centre for a glimpse into Madrid's storied literary and intellectual past.

The Cultural Landscape of Aranjuez, nestled on the banks of the Tagus River, completes Madrid’s UNESCO ensemble. This royal estate is a masterpiece of Spanish Baroque architecture and encompasses the royal palace, gardens, and orchards. Visitors can explore the opulent rooms of the Royal Palace of Aranjuez (which once hosted monarchs) or wander outside through meticulously designed gardens of Jardín del Príncipe and the Parterre.

Cobblestone streets, medieval stone houses and panoramic views of La Sierra de Madrid…what more can you ask for? History buffs and nature lovers alike will be charmed by Patones, a fabled village where time seems to have stood still. The first stop for every visitor is the Old Church of Saint Joseph. No longer a place of worship, it now houses the Tourist Office, an exhibition hall and a model of the surrounding areas—the perfect gateway to understanding the village’s heritage and unique culture. From here, visitors can stroll through the winding streets for a glimpse of the village’s iconic black slate architecture and go on walking trails that meander through the stunning landscapes.

Despite just being a short 30-minute drive from downtown Madrid, Chinchón feels worlds apart. This picturesque town offers visitors a slice of the idyllic Spanish countryside. For those fascinated by history, Chinchón's preserved historical sites like the Plaza Mayor and Castle of the Counts make them a must-visit.

For an authentic taste of the region, visitors can embark on a gastronomic journey through its vibrant street markets, bakeries and charcuteries. It is where you'll find local artisans who specialise in cochinillo asado (roast suckling pig), patatas bravas, rosquillas (traditional Spanish doughnuts), artisanal cheeses and other regional delicacies. We highly recommend a visit to Las Cuadras de Rocinante in Alcalá de Henares and Casa del Pregonero in Chinchón (make sure to order the cochinillo!).

Vineyard ventures

The Greater Madrid region is arguably the preeminent Spanish destination for vinophiles. It is home to some of the country’s most renowned wineries, with a rich viticultural history spanning over 900 years. With over 50 wineries and almost 110 brands of wines, the region offers wine connoisseurs an opportunity to immerse themselves in the rich legacy and craftsmanship of Spanish wine culture. As an added bonus, all this is accessible within only an hour’s drive from the city centre.

San Martín de Valdeiglesias a delightful destination for those seeking an immersive wine experience. Take your pick from the 18 prestigious wineries, such as Bodega Tierra Calma and Las Moradas de San Martín—each producing exceptional vinos that reflect the distinct terroir and wine-making philosophies of the region. Another haven for wine enthusiasts is the picturesque town of Valdelaguna. Apart from boutique wineries, it is also home to a wine museum, where visitors can delve into the area’s rich winemaking history and explore the nuanced flavours of Valdelaguna's wines.

Retail therapy

Madrid has an impressive network of shopping malls and designer boutiques stores such as the famous El Corte Inglés, Barrio de Salamanca and Serrano Street. For high end fashion head over to Las Rozas Village and Galería Canalejas. 

The famous atelier routes consist of small and medium-sized firms such as Tot-Hom and Marcos Luengo that work in line with the values of ‘slow fashion’, and that focus on making timeless designs, using local labour, exquisite tailoring, and quality materials and fabrics. In fact, Spain is one of the few European countries that preserves the craft of artisanal fabric, celebrating generations of craftsmen. 

Active escapes

Fans of football club Real Madrid will not want to miss taking a trip to Santiago Bernabeu Stadium—home of the legendary football club since 1947. The recently refurbished stadium is located in the Chamartín district, allowing enthusiasts to soak up the sporting action without leaving the city. With immersive experiences and guided tours, the stadium gives fans the opportunity to learn how the arena has been transformed over the years and some of its highlights.

Nothing beats a view of clear blue skies during a golf session; now imagine teeing off against the backdrop of Greater Madrid’s stunning landscapes. The region’s world-class courses include the Real Club de Golf La Herrería (a short 15-minute drive from the capital), which sits at the foot of Monte Abantos next to the magnificent Monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial—how’s that for amazing views? Another premier golfing destination is Real Club La Moraleja located north of Madrid. It is home to four stunning courses designed by golfing legend Jack Nicklaus—each one offering a diverse range of challenges but bearing the unmistakable signature of Nicklaus’s expertise.
