The best way to travel like a local, is to ask a local. In this series of travel guides, we ask creatives and insiders from our global community to show us their city, their way

In 2012, Stephanie Chai founded The Luxe Nomad, a travel booking website featuring thousands of curated villas in 33 destinations around the world—including in Bali, Phuket, Niseko and Byron Bay, to name a few hotspots in its repertoire.

With one of two offices located in Bali, Chai considers the Island of the Gods to be a second home, so we asked her to share some of her favourite places to eat, drink and unwind.

Milk and Madu, Berawa

One of my favourite cafes. I love the ambiance, decor and most of all the food. My favourite is their signature poke bowl which is quite unique as they add tempura ginger to the mix.

Bottega Italiana, Berawa

A quaint Italian restaurant with a beach shack vibe. Owned by Italians, they even make their own fresh pasta. You can't go wrong with any of the pasta dishes, and be sure to order the tiramisu.

Passo by Nook

I've been going to this hidden gem for years, as it is right around the corner from our office in Bali. It's set amongst rice fields in the open air, which makes it nice and cool to sit in. I order the vegetarian nasi campur every time.

La Brisa Bali

Great jungle-inspired bar on a low cliff face. Go early in the evening for sundowners. You can literally sit at the edge of the cliff and look down to the waves crashing below. Pre-Covid, it also had great dance parties, which I'm sure will be back!

Spring Spa

I love Spring spa. Located in a beautiful white timber house with a fountain and water feature in the centre. Love the nail area. Tip: go all out and opt for their signature hair treatment at the same time.

The Practice

The most beautiful yoga studio in the world. Built with bamboo and in a circular shape, the design was done to highlight the non-conformity of nature. The high ceilings give the acoustics a truly in-depth sound, so you really do feel the 'ohm'.

Ulu Cliffhouse

Head over to Uluwatu and watch the day (and waves) pass by at the very chic Ulu Cliffhouse. Great beach club with a good vibe.

Bungalow Living Bali

Easily one of the best interior shops in Bali. They make the most beautiful, handmade cushions, as well as other decorative home items you never thought you needed. I just bought some pillows from them in January, which they DHL-ed over to Singapore.

Motel Mexicola

A little cheesy at times, but always good fun for a night out. Dancing on tables is encouraged.
