Hi Son Heung-min! What are your thoughts on the two Tumi collections in this campaign?
I love these two collections. When I first started working with Tumi, I was drawn to the Alpha Bravo bag and the Tegra-Lite suitcase. They are very comfortable and convenient to travel with but also very cool.

What were some of your highlights from the shoot?
We filmed at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium so I was very comfortable. I felt right at home, which helped create a nice atmosphere. I think everybody had a great time—we had some fun together, especially when I did my first ASMR video, which was… interesting!

Your camera celebration pose [Son is known for using his index finger and thumb on each hand to create the shape of a camera after a special moment on the field] is symbolic of your desire to capture special moments. Can you elaborate on the significance behind this gesture?
For me, everything is about being present. Each second is special. Scoring a goal is a very difficult thing, so when I score a goal, I try to remember the exact moment and enjoy that special feeling. The meaning behind the celebration is to capture this particular moment in time. I make sure I remember it forever as I don’t know what the future looks like.

What are some of your pre-game rituals?
I try to stay as cool and calm as possible and try not to overly stress myself before a game. The pressure can be a positive thing if you control it. If not, it controls you and then you don’t perform well on the pitch. My pre-game rituals include having a good night’s sleep, listening to music, making sure I eat healthy food and just reminding myself that this is a game and that I should enjoy it as much as I can.

How do Tumi’s collections resonate with you and your needs as an athlete?
As an athlete, I travel a lot. I am rarely in the same place for more than one week. I am constantly on the road. That’s why the Alpha Bravo backpacks are so good for me as they are made with durable materials and are very functional. I can easily access different areas of the bag through the different pockets and zips, and there is a compartment for everything I need on my journey. The Tegra-Lite collection is very solid, but also very stylish, which I love. To me, the aesthetics are as important as the functionality.

The campaign highlights the discipline required to succeed at the highest level. Can you share how you maintain your level of dedication and focus?
Discipline is essential for every successful person. I try to be disciplined in different areas of my life. The first one is sleep. It’s one of the most important things for me to be able to perform at the highest level. I make sure I sleep eight to nine hours per night. I try to go to sleep very early so that I can wake up fresh. Recovery is also another important part of my lifestyle. I make sure I have treatment sessions for recovery almost every day. Diet is also one of the keys to success. I think some people underestimate how important food is. If you eat well, you have better energy and your mind is more focused. This is, of course, on top of giving 100 per cent at training every day.

What are your goals and aspirations for the future?
In my football career, I want to continue to do everything I can for both the national team and my club. I also want to inspire the younger generation of fans [about the importance of] being a good person and a good player. Ultimately, being a good person is always what will last in life.

As a Tumi ambassador, I want to spread the message that Tumi products will allow you to travel with ease and without worry, while also making you look good.

You’re often referred to as the nicest football player out there. What are some life mantras you live by?
It is always nice to hear this. My mantra is to always give your best—for yourself and the people around you.

Can you describe a moment that made you?
I don’t think there is just one particular moment. Life is full of surprises and each moment helps people evolve. My first move to Germany when I was just a teenager was a special moment. It was tough but I grew so much. I became more mature and responsible. When I was named the captain of the South Korean national team and [when I joined the] Tottenham Hotspur [club], both were huge moments for me.

Aside from soccer, what are your other hobbies or interests?
I love playing games. I also love to eat Korean food, specifically my mum’s home-cooked meals.  I love music, too, I like to listen to some of my favourite artists like Ed Sheeran. Fashion is also something I really love.

What has been the best moment of your career so far?
When I played for the [South Korean] national team and when I joined Hamburger SV for the first time. And, of course, when I joined Tottenham Hotspur.

What is your favourite travel destination?
Korea and London, where my loving and cheering fans are.

What is your favourite breakfast food?
I like to eat omelettes and bread for breakfast.

If you hadn't become a professional athlete, what would you have done?
I never saw myself [doing anything] outside of being a footballer. Maybe an esports player?

What is your biggest pet peeve?
People with no manners and no respect for others.
