Lunch—Boudin Bakery at Fisherman Wharf
A well-deserved lunch is in order. And for your first day in San Francisco, why not make it one to remember with a visit to an institution? Boudin Bakery has several locations across the city, but the one at Fisherman’s Wharf is the spot to savour San Francisco’s famous sourdough bread.
There are two ways to experience Boudin: if you need a proper break, head upstairs to the bistro and indulge in their signature dishes. But for the real experience, stay downstairs at the bakery, grab a bowl of their legendary clam chowder in a sourdough bread bowl, and watch the bakers work their magic.

Afternoon—Visit to Alcatraz prison
No trip to San Francisco is complete without a visit to Alcatraz prison. Once home to some of America’s most infamous criminals, including Al Capone and Robert Stroud, the “Birdman of Alcatraz”, this former prison sits on a rocky island in the bay, steeped in mystery and history. Hop on a ferry from Pier 33 and take the legendary audio tour to immerse yourself fully in the captivating past of this eerie yet fascinating island.
Tatler Tip: Be sure to book your tickets in advance and arrive at the pier by 1pm, as this is the latest ferry departure to Alcatraz.

Watch the sea lions at Pier 39
Back on land, don’t miss Pier 39, where sea lions have made themselves at home since 1989. You’ll likely find yourself lingering, watching them pile up on the docks, soaking in the sun, and lazing the day away.

As the name suggests, The View offers a panoramic experience, paired with creative cocktails that give you a taste of San Francisco’s vibrant nightlife. Don’t miss the signature Ten/89 Martini, a tribute to the city’s resilience during the Loma Prieta Earthquake, when all the glassware above the bar shattered—except for one solitary martini glass.

Morning—Explore Haight-Ashbury and discover the vibrant street art at Mission District
Start your morning with a stroll through the colourful streets of Haight-Ashbury, San Francisco’s iconic hippie district. With legends like Janis Joplin, Yoko Ono, and Jimi Hendrix once calling this area home, the charm is undeniable. As you wander, take in the Victorian houses that define San Francisco’s character—those same ones you’ve probably seen in countless films.
