Disney’s newest and largest cruise ship, Disney Adventure, has arrived and it has planted its flag right here in Singapore. Our editor went aboard the media preview sailing to ask the only question that matters: does it deliver?

Leisure travel does wonders for the mind, body and soul. And while every traveller is different, the goal on holiday is broadly the same: to rest and rejuvenate by indulging in whatever you enjoy most. Add a little magic to that equation, and the experience shifts into something else entirely. And when we say magic, we mean Disney magic.

The highly anticipated Disney Adventure, the newest and largest ship in the Disney Cruise Line fleet, has finally launched. What makes this milestone significant extends beyond the ship itself. It is homeported in Singapore, making this city-state the year-round base for a vessel of global ambition.

It is a floating world of seven fully themed areas, brand-new attractions, a dedicated roller coaster and dining rooms staffed by people who will know your name and your preferences by the end of your first seated dinner. It is unapologetically, emphatically itself and that clarity of vision is, in many ways, its greatest strength.

I am here on the four-night preview sailing to experience the Disney Adventure before its maiden sailing. Over the course of this sailing, I will be reporting back from every corner of the ship—from the Marvel thrill zone on the upper decks to the immersive dining rooms.

Disney Adventure sails three- and four-night itineraries departing from Marina Bay Cruise Centre, and the choice of Singapore as home port is worth noting. Truth be told, Singapore is not a city that needs Disney to put it on the map. Singapore arrives at this partnership with its own considerable credentials: a compact, ambitious city-state whose food culture, architecture, cultural institutions and sheer organisational efficiency have long made it one of Asia’s most rewarding destinations.

The embarkation experience at Marina Bay Cruise Centre began with a smooth and seamless check-in process, living up to  Disney’s reputation when it comes to logistics. Guests were given their respective arrival timings to adhere to; this can be referred to on Disney’s Navigator App—a vital mobile application that every guest must download in order to view and curate their daily itineraries.

My first view of the ship was just outside terminal as our vehicle turned into the drop-off point and it was, to put it simply, breathtaking. It stood majestically against the Singapore skyline—a remarkable sight to soak in. The atmosphere was palpable as everyone—from guests to crew—was clearly excited for the first sail that was about to happen.

Boarding a ship of this scale—18 decks, the largest in the Disney fleet—could reasonably be overwhelming so some. But at Marina Bay Cruise Centre, it was neither. Disney’s Navigator app (a vital part of your experience on board) does a great deal of the heavy lifting here: it manages your arrival window, doubles as a live directory for the ship and, in practice, makes the whole operation feel far more intuitive than it has any right to. Worth downloading before you arrive.

The moment you step into the Grand Hall, the crew applauds. It is a welcoming ritual that immediately sets a personable tone. Efficiency remained the theme of the afternoon as our stateroom, a Deluxe Oceanview Stateroom with Verandah, was ready a mere 30 minutes after boarding, allowing for a seamless drop-and-go before the first order of business: lunch.

For the first meal on board, we headed to Pixar Market, a buffet concept. The stations are a well-curated mix of local heritage and western comfort, where one can oscillate between a surprisingly authentic Hainanese chicken rice or tandoori chicken, and the universal appeal of cheeseburgers and pasta—the former of which can be fully customised to one’s preference.

The evening’s entertainment began with Disney Seas the Adventure, a spirited musical voyage that serves as an ideal primer for the journey ahead. It is a high-production medley of iconic tunes, with appearances from the casts of Frozen, Tangled, Finding Nemo and more. Dinner followed at the Navigator’s Club, where the aesthetic captures the Golden Age of Sail, but the soul of the experience is pure nostalgia.

After the obligatory muster drill and a quick browse at the onboard retail offerings, dinner brought us to Navigator’s Club, the first of Disney’s rotational dining venues. The room is dressed in the Golden Age of Sail: brass fittings, nautical details, the suggestion of somewhere storied. The food is secondary to the experience here, and Disney knows it; characters move through the dining room in what amounts to a live performance, and the effect is not unlike character dining experience at the Disneyland parks. And just like that, the dining room becomes a stage.

Day two

The second day commenced with a curated tour of the ship’s most significant enclaves, revealing how the Adventure manages its vast proportions through clever segmentation. But before the day gets going, there is one item of business that no Disney cruise would be complete without—and that is the Mickey waffle.

Seven themed areas

Moving on now: for the uninitiated, there are seven themed areas on the Adventure—think Disney-inspired rooms, themed dining experiences and dazzling live shows—making it rather straightforward to organise and maximise your fun on board.

These imaginatively themed areas across the ship each offer immersive experiences that bring the tales from Disney, Marvel and Pixar to life on a grand scale. Use the second day of your cruise to make the most of your time on board by making your way through every area if you can. This way, you can figure out which areas are your favourites and you can decide where you’d like to spend most of your time at.

My favourite areas are San Fransokyo Street—mainly because the dedicated Duffy and Friends Shop is tucked away at the end of the section, right by Baymax Cinemas where you can catch a classic or first-release Disney movie—and the picturesque Disney Imagination Garden which stands at the heart of the ship. Featuring its own courtyard and stage, it’s where guests can catch live performances such as the high-energy Let’s Set Sail dance party as well as Avengers Assemble! and Duffy and The Friend Ship—an all-new live show.

A wonderland for kids

For those travelling with families, the Disney’s Oceaneer Club is a welcome respite. It is an imaginative sanctuary for children aged three to ten, where the storytelling is both immersive and engaging. Kids from the ages of three to ten will get to interact with beloved characters in themed spaces inspired by Disney, Pixar and Marvel stories. There are toys, an open seating area for arts and crafts, and continuous Disney movies played. Essentially, it’s every kid’s wildest Disney dream come to live. The intention behind this kids club is for tired and deserving parents to catch up on some well deserved rest by dropping off their kids here and visiting the adults-only areas to indulge in a tipple or even getting in a wellness treatment at the spa.

If you have time, drop by the spa and soak in the nature-inspired oasis that feels worlds away from the high-energy decks. The expansive thermal suite, outfitted with walkthrough experiential showers, heated loungers, and even a hammam, offers the kind of sophisticated rejuvenation one expects at a luxury resort.

Spa by the ocean

For the wellness-conscious, the adjoining fitness centre and meditation room provide a necessary counterweight to the indulgences found elsewhere on board. Between explorations, we paused at the Palo Café. Positioned on the cobblestone-style patio of the Palo Trattoria and subtly themed after the film Luca, it successfully evokes the charm of a seaside village on the Italian Riviera. It was here, over a sugar-free vanilla iced latte, that the ship felt at its most intimate and European.

Dinner was at Animator’s Table, where the dining room takes its inspiration from the classic ink-and-paint studios of Disney and Pixar's animation departments—paint jars, brushes, original artwork from Aladdin, Frozen and more on the walls. The headline feature is a live animation element: sketches drawn at the table are brought to life on screen during the meal, which can be either exciting or embarrassing depending on how well your artistic skills are. P.S. don’t forget to order the hot favourite Disney cruise dessert at dinner: the Mickey Ice Cream Bar.

Fireworks at sea

Then there is this. Disney Cruise Line is the only cruise line that sets off fireworks at sea—and on Disney Adventure, that distinction is put to considerable use. The second evening’s finale is a fireworks display staged as a tribute to The Lion King, with narration by Shah Rukh Khan drawing guests up to the top deck as the sky above the ship erupts in colour. The soundtrack does exactly what you would expect: Circle of Life and Can You Feel the Love Tonight carry across the open ocean, and the effect—fireworks, sea, darkness all around—is something that a theme park version of this simply cannot replicate. The setting does the work. Whatever your relationship with The Lion King, watching fireworks from the deck of a ship at sea is an experience that’s unforgettable, and leave it to Disney to stage a moment like this.

Morning: Breakfast with a View, Then Back to Pixar Market

By the third day, the rhythm of life on board has properly settled in—and the morning proves it. We start with room service on the verandah, which is, in all honesty, difficult to fault. Coffee, the ocean, no agenda. There are worse ways to begin a day at sea.

Breakfast continues (because, why not?) at Pixar Market, and after sampling Enchanted Summer on the morning of our first full day on board, the comparison is worth making plainly: Pixar Market wins. The buffet spread here is delightful and we much prefer the space and the energy here. And of course, the daily Mickey waffles, which remain every bit as good on the second visit.

Into the Concierge World

If Day 1 gave us the ship at large, Day 3 is where we properly settle into the Concierge experience — and the difference in register is immediately apparent. Step through into the Concierge section and the pace shifts. It is quieter, more considered and, frankly, feels like a different ship.

The Aladdin-inspired lounge is the centrepiece, and it earns its reference point — warm tones, decorative detail, the kind of room you want to linger in. Free-flow Bacha Coffee and TWG tea run throughout the day, with alcohol available at happy hour from 5 to 9pm or at an additional cost beyond that. There is also, rather charmingly, a dedicated kids' corner within the lounge — a thoughtful touch that means families do not have to choose between the Concierge experience and keeping younger guests occupied.

The private pool deck is a genuine highlight. Unobstructed ocean views, well-spaced loungers, proper shade — it does not feel like a cruise ship deck so much as a well-edited resort terrace. For guests who find the main pool areas a touch overwhelming, this is where to spend the afternoon.

The spa suites deserve a mention of their own. Each can accommodate up to eight guests, with treatment rooms, salon seating and private oceanview lounges — an arrangement that makes them particularly well-suited to group travel or a family wanting to spend a few hours in the same space without being on top of one another.

Lunch: Indian Cuisine and kids’ section at Pixar Market

Back to Pixar Market for lunch, this time making a deliberate point of the Indian food station. Consider this a firm recommendation: the Indian cuisine on board is genuinely excellent, and it is the kind of thing that could easily be overlooked in favour of more familiar options. Do not let that happen. The dishes are well-spiced, generously portioned and comfortably among the best food we ate across the entire sailing. A word to the wise on the rest of the spread: do not walk past the kids’ section. The chicken tenders and mac and cheese are genuinely excellent, and no one is checking your age at the counter. Desserts rotate daily, so pay attention—the raspberry bread and butter pudding is not to be missed, and neither are the chocolate chip cookies. The ice cream changes flavours each day too; trying a different one each day is a small but worthwhile commitment.

Around the Ship: Gramma Tala’s, Weezy’s Freezies and Pizza Planet

By now, you have earned the right to graze. Gramma Tala’s serves a rotating selection of local and Pacific-inspired dishes—on our visit, Hainanese chicken rice, candied yams, huli huli chicken, macaroni salad and Sichuan tofu, all of which held up well as a mid-afternoon stop. Weezy’s Freezies offers complimentary soft serve in strawberry and vanilla swirl, which is exactly what it sounds like and exactly what you want at that point in the afternoon.

Pizza Planet is worth knowing about for a simple reason: free pizza, available throughout the day all till midnight in cheese, BBQ chicken, pepperoni and margherita. It is an easy stop between activities and, as it turns out, a useful one to revisit

A Disney Cruise Tradition: Decorated Doors and Pixie Dusting

It doesn’t take long before you start noticing the decorated cabin doors—a long-standing Disney cruise tradition where guests personalise their stateroom entrances with magnets, artwork and themed decorations. It is one of those details that adds to the warmth of the ship’s atmosphere, and worth taking in as you walk the corridors.

If you are feeling generous, this is also the day to consider pixie dusting—the tradition of leaving small gifts such as chocolates or sweets outside fellow guests’ doors. Entirely optional, entirely in the spirit of things.

Characters, Meet and Greets, and the Mickey Ice Cream Bar

Book your character meet and greet sessions early—Duffy the Disney Bear, Mickey and Minnie, Baymax and others fill up quickly, and these are among the most genuinely joyful moments on the ship regardless of whether you are travelling with children. One more insider note: ask specifically for the Mickey ice cream bar. It is not always front and centre, but it is worth seeking out.

Evening: Rotational Dining

Dinner is at the next rotational dining venue, which happens to be at Pixar Market again. By this point in the sailing, the team knows your preferences without being asked, which is when the rotational dining concept starts to pay off properly. If you are in the mood for wine, ask for the bottle package menu—it is not prominently advertised but worth knowing about.

Day four

Morning: Mickey Churro Waffles and One Final Round of Retail

The last morning begins, as the others have, with room service on the verandah—cereal, juices, mini muffins, the ocean, the particular quiet of a ship still waking up. An hour later, up to Pixar Market, where the buffet has saved its best for last: the Mickey churro waffles make their appearance today, and they are worth the wait. Crisp, warm, dusted in cinnamon sugar—a small but genuinely satisfying send-off from the breakfast spread we have returned to every morning.

The rest of the morning is spent doing what the final day of any good holiday demands: shopping. World of Disney and World of Disney Too carry the full range of exclusive merchandise, while the Duffy and Friends Shop is exactly as charming as it sounds. A stop at Diamonds and Wishes yields an extra charm—today also happens to be International Women’s Day, and the ship has marked the occasion accordingly.

Tiana’s Bayou Lounge: Beignets Before Lunch

A pre-lunch stop at Tiana’s Bayou Lounge is, in retrospect, non-negotiable. The space is inspired by The Princess and the Frog—magnolia blossoms overhead, Spanish moss trailing down, a warm light that does a convincing impression of a New Orleans evening. The menu runs to specialty coffees, premium teas and creative mocktails, but the reason to come is the beignets. Classic, generously powdered and served warm, they are the kind of thing you eat standing at the counter and then immediately consider ordering again.

Lunch: Stitch’s Ohana Grill

Lunch is at Stitch’s Ohana Grill, a relaxed, Lilo & Stitch-inspired dining spot that wears its Hawaiian North Shore reference comfortably—surfboards, raffia grass, the easy warmth of a beach hangout that happens to be at sea. The menu is straightforward American: burgers, sandwiches and sides. We had the classic burger with fries. It was exactly what it needed to be—juicy, well-seasoned and entirely satisfying at that point in the afternoon. No frills, no apologies.

One more soft serve at Weezy’s Freezies afterwards—chocolate and vanilla swirl this time—because at this point, why not.

‘Avengers Assemble!‘ A Second Look

For those who missed it earlier in the sailing, today is the day to catch Avengers Assemble! at the Garden Stage in Disney Imagination Garden. The show had been the most talked-about production among guests throughout the cruise, and it earns the word of mouth. The format is an outdoor stage spectacular—Spider-Man, Iron Man, Captain America, Black Widow, Thor, Black Panther and others, all delivered with the kind of stunt work and special effects that justify watching from the front. Deadpool’s appearance, for what it is worth, genuinely lands.

Sunset at Marvel Landing

Before the evening begins in earnest, Marvel Landing offers something that is easy to overlook in the rush of activities: a genuinely beautiful spot to watch the sunset. The upper deck position and unobstructed ocean views make it one of the better vantage points on the ship, and at golden hour it is as photogenic as anywhere on board.

The Last Dinner: Mike & Sulley’s Omakase

The final dinner is Mike & Sulley’s Flavors of Asia—and for the last night, we opt for the nine-course omakase. It is the right call. The format suits those who want to mark the occasion without having to think too hard about it; the kitchen makes the decisions, and they are good ones. The ingredients are fresh throughout, but the standout is unequivocal: the A5 Satsuma striploin beef, served with broccolini. It is the best thing we ate on the ship, and a quietly impressive note on which to close four nights of dining.

For those who have been keeping an eye on the wine bottle packages throughout the sailing—tonight is the night to use them.

A Nightcap at Spellbound

The evening ends at Spellbound, tucked into a shadowy corner of Town Square and inspired by the Evil Queen from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. It is one of the more theatrically conceived spaces on the ship—rich detailing, a woodland atmosphere, cocktails framed as potions in the best possible sense. Whether the concept sounds like your idea of a great bar or not, the drinks are well-made and the atmosphere is genuinely distinctive. A proper send-off.
