Cover Wyndham Grand Phu Quoc is the largest Wyndham property yet

American hotel chain Wyndham Hotels and Resorts have just opened its largest establishment in Phu Quoc, Vietnam

As Vietnam’s tourism industry grows exponentially, so too are the number of hotels and resorts in the country—with the latest addition being Wyndham Grand Phu Quoc. Located along the popular Bai Dai beach, the hotel isn’t just another Wyndham property. In fact, it’s currently the largest Wyndham Grand in the world.

Wyndham Hotels & Resorts’s vice president of operations South East Asia & Pacific Rim Ben Schumacher shared that Vietnam is a “critical market for Wyndham in the region”. It’s especially so in an emerging destination like Phu Quoc island, which “in just a few years, has quickly become one of the country’s premier tourist spots,” he continued.

On top of its 1,378 rooms and 21 villas, the latest resort boasts a range of facilities and entertainment centres. That includes the Corona casino, an outdoor swimming pool, a shopping street, a kid’s club, indoor cinema and more. With plenty to keep you entertained, you won’t even need to leave the resort while you’re here.

So, when we were invited for a two-night stay at the lavish hotel for its grand opening ceremony, we had to give it a go.

First Impressions

Hospitality began once we stepped out of Phu Quoc airport. Since it’s situated a 25-minute ride away, the resort offers transport services to and from the airport. While this may not be a big gesture to some, we were grateful as it added a touch of convenience to our trip.

As we arrived late in the evening, we weren’t able to make out the grand-scale exterior of the hotel entirely. However, upon entering, we immediately noticed how big it was—from its spacious lobby to a shopping street located right in the middle of the hotel.

We were met with friendly staff who promptly took our luggage and assisted with checking us in. The check-in process was quick, which is always a plus. We were also guided in scanning our faces, which would be used to enter the various restaurants, attractions and facilities around the resort.

Do Not Disturb

We were treated to a spacious 42 sqm standard bedroom. Simple yet elegantly designed, the space is complete with a comfortable king-sized bed, private balcony and a marble-clad bathroom. The living area’s floor-to-ceiling windows also bring in natural light, brightening the room while making it feel extra spacious. As our room was located on the sixth floor of the hotel, the balcony overlooked the resort’s garden and convention centre. While we were not able to catch the sunrise, (which rose at five in the morning during our stay), we were able to catch a glimpse of the stunning sunset from our balcony.

Apart from classic rooms and suites, the resort also offers 21 newly constructed villas located a stone’s throw away from Bai Dai beach. They were not ready to receive guests yet, but the team at Wyndham hinted that the villas would be officially available to book later this year.

The Extras

The largest Wyndham Grand in the world, the resort is filled with an array of facilities—from an indoor cinema to a tranquil spa and relaxing pool, and direct access to Bai Dai beach.

While exploring the resort, we admired its lavish 1,500 sqm outdoor swimming pool, complete with a pool bar that offers refreshing cocktails that were perfect for a day spent soaking in the sun. Walking further ahead, we found Bai Dai beach, one of the most popular ones in the province. Stretching over 15 kilometres, the beach offers golden sand and calm waters.

With Vietnam being known for its head massage treatments, we couldn’t miss a trip to the resort’s spa for one. Once we stepped in, we were warmly welcomed by the staff, who brought us to the waiting area and refreshed us with cold towels and warm ginger tea. We opted for its express spa treatment and were brought to our massage rooms. Calming music filled the air, while our masseuse pampered our scalps, necks and shoulders. They were also very adaptable to our needs, ensuring that we were comfortable throughout the session. Although it was only a 30-minute treatment, we left feeling extremely relaxed and rejuvenated.

Food & Drink

We then headed over to the Nautilus restaurant, an all-day buffet restaurant. Even though we arrived late in the evening, we were still treated to a variety of dishes spanning from Asian to European flavours. Taking in the spread, our eyes were instantly drawn to its live noodle station—where we selected a comforting bowl of pho that came brimming with rice noodles, seafood and flavourful broth. Other dishes available were banh mi, fresh sashimi, sweet and sour soup, and made-to-order pasta.

Whether we visited during breakfast, lunch or dinner, the buffet spread was constantly changing—meaning that we were never tired of its offerings even after multiple visits during our trip. For example, we were treated to porridge and waffles for breakfast, before digging into eel noodles and beef strips for lunch.

Apart from Nautilus, the resort is also home to Atlantis restaurant which specialises in Italian cuisine, and Chinese restaurant which is aptly named, it serves up authentic Chinese fare. Although we were not able to try these restaurants this time around, it’s definitely on our list of must-tries for when we return.

Tatler Tip

While the hotel is filled with enough amenities and activities to keep you entertained, don’t forget to venture out too. Take a short trip from the resort to Vinpearl Safari, Vietnam’s largest semi-wildlife park that’s home to a plethora of animals from giraffes to zebras. While we were visiting, we got to hop onto an enclosed safari bus which brought us around the enclosure. The safari is split into multiple zones, allowing us to see lions, bears, deers and more. As the bus was safely enclosed, the animals have free range to roam around us.

The island is as vibrant at night as it is in the day. When night falls, it comes alive with night markets and performances. A quick car ride from the hotel brought us to Grand World to watch The Quintessence of Vietnam. The modern performance features over 300 veteran dancers that take audiences through the history of Vietnam, showcasing the country’s unique culture and national identity.
