From the energy of the National Stadium to the tranquility of the Grand Hyatt Oasis, join me as I navigate my first HYROX and the evolution of the modern active getaway.
Once a clever bit of marketing shorthand coined by travel media, the "sport-cation" has evolved alongside our collective travel habits. The ongoing collaboration between Hyatt and Hyrox reflects this shift toward a more active lifestyle, recognising that wellness is increasingly a mental and physical pursuit. With Grand Hyatt Singapore’s athlete-friendly gym providing the perfect space for pre-race fine-tuning, the property served as the vital anchor for a weekend where the National Stadium became the ultimate arena.

Pre-race momentum
The scale of the Hyrox movement is, quite frankly, staggering. With 14,500 participants, the Singapore event at the National Stadium now accounts for a mid-size race, a figure dwarfed by the likes of New York, where 55,000 athletes compete over several days. In the words of my long-time friend and Hyrox Head of Operations, APAC, Richard Cowley, the growth is best illustrated by a simple comparison: "We had 961 participants in our first Hong Kong edition in November 2022," he noted, "and we are now looking forward to hosting around 20,000 athletes there this coming May."
The day started in the best of ways, meeting yet another dear friend and ex-pro triathlete Michal Buček, who now serves as the voice of Hyrox. The energy in the National Stadium was electrifying and it felt grounding to have that familiar voice greeting you. The stadium, partially covered, provided a perfect venue—cool, grand, and remarkably efficient. Being a first-time participant, I took a few minutes to walk around the Roxzone, understanding the flow of the stations as the race spirit settled in. I soon found myself in the start tunnel with another 65 athletes of all age groups, a reminder that this is a race against the course and oneself. With this in mind, I began at my own pace, with the ambitious 1h15 target in mind.

The race: red line, sweat and wall balls
While the stations can be daunting, Hyrox remains a running race at its core. This is where the most time can be gained or lost, and where your heart rate can either settle into a steady rhythm or completely blow up. The delicate balance between pushing hard and never crossing your "red line" was in play from the beginning: keep steady on the Skierg, take strategic brakes mid-lane on the push sleds, and on the pulls, ensure you lean back to let your entire body weight do the heavy lifting rather than relying on the arms alone.
The race only truly started at the burpee station, where 80 meters had never felt so long. In the words of my daughter, who was proudly cheering me on from the sidelines, it seemed my rests on the floor between each rep were endless; yet, in the heat of the moment, I felt as though I was cruising. That rhythm carried me through to the second half, where I completed the rowing and the farmer's carry with discipline and control.
By the time I entered the seventh and eighth runs, I was sharing the track with many participants, most of them on fresh legs, and their fast pace provided a great motivation to keep pushing. As I picked up the 20kg sandbag for the dreaded lunges, I glanced at the clock: I had just crossed the one-hour mark. The pressure was on, and I forged ahead under the watchful eye of a judge making sure my knees touched the floor on every rep.
I was steady, still in control, but my focus remained entirely on the final hurdle. There was a profound moment of achievement when I entered the Roxzone for the last time, heading for the wall balls. Those proved hard—mentally very hard—yet I had incredible support. My long-time friend, the "voice of Hyrox," began counting me down over the stadium speakers, joined by my kids cheering from the stands directly opposite me. Finishing with 15 back-to-back reps as it felt like the entire stadium was cheering me on was an unforgettable rush. I crossed the line in an hour and 20 minutes. It was a respectable time, enough to secure a top 10 spot in my age group and provide the perfect motivation to keep training and come back stronger.

The ninth station: The Grand Hyatt Oasis
Once the finisher picture was taken, the focus shifted from the stadium floor to what is affectionately known as the "Ninth Station." This is where the Grand Hyatt Singapore, recently crowned Tatler BEST 2025 Best City Hotel, proved itself as the ultimate basecamp. After the sweat and grime of the Roxzone, handing over my race gear to the hotel’s laundry service was the first real win of the afternoon. Another benefit of the Hyrox package is a generous discount at all Hyatt spas. A unique sense of camaraderie filled the property as I spotted fellow competitors, keeping the spirit of the race alive in the air.
The transition from the scale of the National Stadium to the Oasis, the property’s acclaimed poolside restaurant and tropical sanctuary, was a masterclass in contrast. We spent the rest of the day there with family, friends and fellow racers, making the most of the balneo jets in the pool and much-needed mobility stretches on the lush lawn. As the sun began to set, we gathered for the BBQ buffet, a perfect finish to a day defined by both grit and grandeur in a truly tropical paradise.
The Hyrox caravan doesn’t stop here. For those looking to sharpen their times or experience this unique atmosphere, the circuit moves next to Hong Kong in May, followed by Jakarta in June. As travel continues to evolve into a more active, experience-driven pursuit, the partnership between Hyatt and Hyrox has set a new benchmark for the modern athlete. I’ve already started looking at my training splits as a top 5 finish in Jakarta is calling. See you, at my next Hyatt race-cation.
