If you love exploring Singapore’s rich heritage and thriving food scene, Hotel Indigo Singapore Katong is the perfect staycation spot

Now that we can travel once again, staycations are, admittedly, no longer the first option many Singaporeans look for when considering a holiday or a quick getaway. After all, with idyllic places like Desaru and Langkawi just a short flight or ferry ride away, it certainly makes more sense to opt for a holiday overseas.

However, there is still much to be said for staycations post-Covid especially if you are trying to maximise your vacation time or if you enjoy exploring certain areas in Singapore. This was something I found myself grateful for when offered the opportunity to go on a heritage staycation to Hotel Indigo Singapore Katong, a boutique hotel that opened its doors in July this year.

Located in the heart of the historic neighbourhood of Katong, Hotel Indigo boasts 131 guestrooms and is surrounded by some of Singapore’s most famous eats such as Katong Laksa as well as bars, shophouses and hip cafes.

Knowing how rich the area was in terms of things to do, see and eat, I packed my bags and allowed myself to be immersed in Singapore’s history for a night.

The boutique hotel is housed on the site of the former Joo Chiat Police Station, which is now a conservation building. Surrounded by the neighbourhood of Katong, the hotel is carefully designed for travellers and staycation lovers hoping to explore the area and all it has to offer.

Upon arrival at the hotel lobby to check in, we were warmly greeted by staff members who ushered us into a brightly lit waiting area where we were served welcome drinks. The lobby was vast and decorated with historical Peranakan-inspired details and even a mini exhibition with historical facts and local books.

We were soon checked in swiftly and directed to our standard king room to settle down in.

The rooms in the hotel range from standard rooms that are perfect for couples, to slightly bigger ones that offer gorgeous views of the Katong neighbourhood. All the rooms are artfully decked out in Peranakan-inspired designs with beautiful tiles and creatively designed furniture.

Our standard king bedroom came with a King-sized bed, a sofa, a mahjong table that had been converted into a convenient table and a spacious bathroom.

The bathroom featured floor-to-ceiling windows that lit up the expansive bathroom and provided unobstructed views of the neighbourhood. It was complete with a wide-standing shower adorned with Peranakan-inspired tiles.

One of my favourite things to do on holiday is to lounge by the pool with a book in hand so this was one of the first things I did.

Although it is a small property, Hotel Indigo Singapore Katong boasts a rooftop infinity pool that overlooks the entire heritage town of Katong. The pool area was relatively quiet in the afternoon and provided ample space for comfortable lounging. You can opt for some of their deck chairs or cushioned sun beds while you are up on the roof. Don’t worry about not being able to hide from the sun because the hotel provides deck chairs carefully placed in the shade.

Behind the pool area is a 24-hour fitness centre that is fully equipped with exercise machines for you to work off those calories you likely gained from eating all the lovely local fare that surrounds the hotel. Multiple bowls of Katong laksa anyone?

In terms of dining, Hotel Indigo Singapore Katong is serviced by Baba Chews Bar and Eatery, a small restaurant connected to the hotel. Guests can come here to enjoy breakfast every morning as well as local and Western fare, coffee, tea and cocktails throughout the day.

Our first taste of what the restaurant had to offer was through room service, which we did not hesitate to order once we checked in. Yes, we are indulgent that way.

Eager to see the breadth of the restaurant, we ordered a char kway teow and an East Coast Wagyu Burger. The burger, which was a brioche bun served with a beef patty, lettuce, tomatoes, cheese and caramelised onions, was on the classic side and certainly hit the spot.

However, the real star of the show was the char kway teow dish, which was composed of flat rice noodles wok fried with fish cake, beansprouts, cockles and prawns. The noodles were cooked perfectly with a smoky taste that came through strongly. An excellent example of a classic hawker dish cooked perfectly despite not being served at a typical hawker centre.

Breakfast the next morning was an equally lovely affair with a small buffet selection and an a la carte menu that guests can choose from. Guests can opt for a classic Western breakfast of eggs and sides or a local one which features a rotating menu of Singaporean favourites such as laksa or nasi lemak.

Tatler Tip:

The hotel often prepares freshly squeezed juices that they circulate during breakfast so make sure you request one during your meal.
