The 91-year-old Chateau Marmont in West Hollywood is set to be transformed into new a luxurious, private, member-only hotel which will re-open next year

Known for its storied residents and French-style architecture, Los Angeles’ infamous Chateau Marmont will transform into a luxurious, private, member-only hotel that will look more like a residence rather than a traditional hotel model.

Originally built nearly 100 years ago, the castle-like hotel was inspired by the Chateau d'Amboise, a royal retreat in the Loire Valley in France, and has continued to draw well-to-do clientele since it first opened its doors.

The Sunset Boulevard property has been home to countless celebrities and high profile travelers but the 91-year old hotel is about to become even more elusive if André Balazs has anything to do with it. First opened as a luxury apartment building in 1929, the property was converted to a hotel during the Great Depression and, now in the hands of Balazs, will undergo its most premium transformation to date.

According to a report in the LA Times, a spokesperson for Balazs has confirmed the hotel owner’s plan to convert the hotel into a more exclusive venue that will allow approved members to buy “a piece of a portfolio of the best real estate in the world,” adding that “members will be able to sell their shares back to the management company or other approved members, as they would with any other real estate investment.”

Approved members will own shares of the property that will include the privilege of access to a private dining space, a personal butler, and the ability to leave their belongings over extended periods of time—but all this will come with the responsibility of paying regular fees to cover the cost of management.

The representative added that health and safety procedures have become of the utmost to the Chateau Marmont in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, and as such, offering a members-only reprise will allow for management to know all guests before they arrive while limiting the shorter term hotel guests.
