The iconic tourist attraction and Asia’s oldest funicular railway, famous for its views of Victoria Harbour and the Hong Kong skyline, will re-open with immersive entertainment experiences after months of renovation
After months of closure, the sixth-generation Peak Tram will open to the public again on August 27 with a range of updated features.
The upgraded version of the funicular railway, which first opened in 1888, features larger, all-new dark green cars, new ropes and track rails, and replaced haulage, control and signalling systems. The Central and Peak terminuses have also been refurbished and expanded to accommodate 1,300 people in the waiting areas, a move which is expected to reduce waiting time by 70 per cent. The platforms and tramcar floors have also been aligned to provide step-free access.

The redesign project cost HK$799 million. Martyn Sawyer, group director of The Hongkong and Shanghai Hotels Limited, which is the mother company of the Peak Tramways Company, said in a statement, “We are incredibly excited to launch the sixth generation Peak Tram, marking a significant milestone in the history of this much loved icon which has served Hong Kong residents and visitors since 1888.”
