Golden retrievers in the lobby, caviar on the menu and spa-town portraits—Fairmont goes all out on International Dog Day

For International Dog Day on August 26, Fairmont Hotels & Resorts is putting its paw print firmly on luxury pet travel. Across its global portfolio, the brand is spotlighting services that elevate canine comfort from afterthought to headline act—complete with in-room dining, embroidered bathrobes, curated city guides and a roster of resident dogs trained to charm even the most travel-weary guests. From Tokyo to Sonoma, Fairmont is showing what five-star travel looks like when dogs are treated as more than just plus-ones.

Fairmont isn’t just pet-friendly. At many properties, it’s the dogs that run the show beyond International Dog Day. Canine Ambassadors are on hand to greet guests, join walks or simply fill in for the furry friends left at home. At Fairmont Tokyo, the recently opened flagship in Japan, Serene the golden retriever serves as Chief Happiness Officer. In Boston, Cori Copley—a black lab with her own social following—is known to assist with weddings. At Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa, guests are welcomed by Chardonnay, a golden retriever trained by Napa’s Canine Guardians who is officially titled Director of Pet Relations.

Special treats on International Dog Day

Across the portfolio, International Dog Day is an excuse to go all out. At Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge and Fairmont Copley Plaza, dogs can order from a gourmet room service menu featuring dishes like Boston Codfish & Caviar. At The Plaza, a Fairmont-managed hotel, dogs are given custom bathrobes and a tower of macarons made from honey, oat flour and coconut oil. There’s no pet fee and no size or weight limit.

Rooms are designed with animals in mind—spacious, easy to navigate and stocked with beds, bowls and welcome kits. Several hotels also offer on-request dog walking through vetted partners, including Fairmont Waterfront in Vancouver and Fairmont Olympic in Seattle. Concierge teams at Banff Springs and Hotel Vancouver hand out local guides that highlight dog-friendly patios, parks and trails.

Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn goes one step further, partnering with a local artist to create custom pet portraits for guests. The result is a rare souvenir that doesn’t involve selfies or filters.

Fairmont’s broader strategy is about normalising high-end pet travel. Luxury, in this case, includes thoughtful attention to dogs—and not just on International Dog Day.
