A striking edifice in the bustling metropolis, Makati Shangri-La, Manila has served as the venue of countless milestones, celebrations and special moments since 1993. Its rich heritage is woven into the fabric of the city, its name synonymous with opulence and prestige. When news broke out that the mighty five-star hotel would be temporarily closed from February 2021, it felt unreal. We were in the middle of a global pandemic with no foreseeable end, and we didn’t know when we would see its glorious doors open again.
Fast forward to today and the wait is finally over. Complete with exquisite hors d’oeuvres, cocktails and wine, Tatler Philippines greeted the reopening of the hotel on August 8, 2023 with a coterie of dear friends and colleagues over a two-evening event series on August 2 and 3. We called it, “Coming Home”.

Over the course of two nights at the lobby atrium, we held an intimate gathering of influential society figures, business leaders, and diplomatic envoys—all of whom had fond and precious memories to share about the storied address.
After a warm welcome from Makati Shangri-La, Manila hotel manager Udo Wittich, emcees Issa Litton and Aziza Mondoñedo made sure to go around the room to ask select guests to share their reminiscing. Many recalled regular visits to hotel outlets Shang Palace and Sage Grill as well as grand celebrations at the Rizal Ballroom, where Tatler Philippines celebrated our own eponymous balls from 2002 to 2015.
