The city of London is teeming with history, culture and endless attractions. With so much to offer, you could spend weeks there and still not see it all. While there’s certainly no shortage of things to do within the city limits, taking day trips from London is also a great way to explore what England has to offer.

Whether you’re a history buff or nature enthusiast, a myriad of towns are located within easy reach of the capital. So, if you’re looking to get away from the bustling city for a day, why not consider a quick day trip out? From riverside walks to idyllic streets, here are some day trips from London to add to your must-visit list.

1. Cambridge

A little less than an hour away by train is Cambridge, a quaint town known for its centuries-old university, historic buildings and punting. On top of exploring its colleges, don’t forget to try your hand at punting. This traditional boat ride takes you along the tranquil River Cam and offers plenty of gorgeous views of the town, including iconic landmarks like King's College Chapel and Bridge of Sighs.

2. Stratford-upon-Avon

Shakespeare fans will not want to miss out on a trip to this medieval town. Known for being the birthplace of Britain’s famous bard William Shakespeare, this town is filled with charm and history. Take a walk around the town and learn more about the bard, from visiting his family homes to catching a play at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre. Here, you’ll also find a mix of boutique stores, tea rooms and bars.

3. Brighton

One of the most well-known beach towns in England, Brighton oozes with character. Apart from its calming beaches, the coastal town is also home to a range of independent shops and traditional pubs. Start the day by exploring Brighton Palace Pier a Grade II-listed pier with arcade games and rides. Once you see all that, take a walk through The Lanes, a district packed with record stores, bookshops, independent boutiques and more.

4. Canterbury

Located an hour away by train, Canterbury is one of the most popular destinations to visit for its rich heritage, architecture and vibrant nightlife. Explore King’s Lane on foot or bike and find a selection of quaint indie shops. When you feel peckish, check out its farmers markets and dig into traditional classics. Don’t forget to stop by the Canterbury Cathedral, a Unesco World Heritage Site and one of the oldest Christian structures in England.

5. Bath

If you’re looking to learn more about England’s rich history, head to Bath, a city known for its Roman-built baths. The city is home to a plethora of independent local shops, museums and festivals. While you’re here, don’t miss out on visiting the Thermal Bath Spa, Britain’s only natural thermal hot springs. Beyond the city, explore the countryside and find attractions like the Stonehenge, Castle Combe and Longleat Safari Park.
