Relaunched under the umbrella of Araw Hospitality Group, Bacau Bay Coron features renovated accommodations for a comfortable, home-away-from-home feel. Light-coloured palettes, gentle greens and timeless wood accents permeate not just through the rooms, but in every facet of the resort. This makes exploring the development a charming activity in and of itself. By working with indigenous designers and craftsmen, there is an irresistible charm throughout the entire development.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held to officially reopen the refreshed Bacau Bay Coron, attended by Araw Hospitality Group executives and its CEO, Jean Henri Lhuillier. “We’re world class, but we’d like to go higher. That’s really what Araw [Hospitality Group] does,” he said during his opening remarks. “We want to be able to bring hospitality to another level.”

During a social at Sirena Pier Bar, we learned more about how the resort fits into Araw Hospitality Group’s portfolio, and how its relaunch is setting the tone moving forward.

“We have a holistic mindset in terms of luxury from all aspects,” Lhuillier explains. The Araw Hospitality Group is relatively young—just five years old—but they have made great progress in integrating everything they’ve learned at one property and applying it in another. Bacau Bay Coron is no different. “I really believe what’s important is how the hotel is run and the people behind it,” he adds.

“It’s about linking that world-class service we have within the Araw Hospitality Group,” Lhuillier explains. They have taken cues from across their portfolio, including Nawa Wellness, whose influence can be seen in Bacau Bay Coron’s very own Alon Spa, which comprises outdoor cabanas where guests may experience rejuvenating treatments. “It’s making sure our services are better, our tours are better, and when guests come to the hotel, we understand what they want.”

The resort is especially leaning upon the unique offerings that only the island of Coron can provide. “What’s most important for me is making sure that the client gets what [they] want, and it’s [about] creating those packages.” Aside from their prolific boat tours across the nature-rich locale, Lhuillier emphasises that there is plenty to do inland, as well—including hiking up the nearby mountains. “We’re going to make sure we can curate it for them. If you need a bottle of wine, cheese or whatever else you’d like, we’ll bring it up there.”

A selection of dining options plays a large part in Bacau Bay Coron’s relaunch. It is not content with impressing you with its flavours, but adds quite a measure of spectacle.

Situated along the sand and within sight of the nearby cabanas, the Pugon Beachside Pizzeria features a curated array of Italian favourites and a few Asian-inspired twists. Our welcome dinner included dishes of authentic carbonara, seafood negra aglio olio and bolognese, served alongside spicy korean chicken wings and lechon bao for a kick of spice and comforting familiarity.

Sirena Pier Bar is located at the furthest edge of Bacau Bay, which boasts a breathtaking view of the sea, sun and sky. Walking along the wooden boardwalk is a delightful treat in itself, as one can admire the mangrove forest that the resort thoughtfully incorporates. Imbibe in excellent craft cocktails while basking in the golden hour, with the sound of the crashing waves beneath your feet.

With hanging lanterns, shoji latticework doors and a zen garden, the Kaigan Teppanyaki Bar experience begins before you’ve even set foot indoors. Inside, a theatrical dining performance awaits as chefs prepare expertly grilled dishes before your eyes. Off the grill, enjoy Japanese staples such as karaage, gyoza and more alongside select spirits.

By wind and wave across Coron

A short distance away from Sirena is Bacau Bay’s very own dock, which means one has private access to the nearby islands. From here, we set out on a chartered tour to three destinations that encapsulate the beauty that Coron has to offer.

Our first stop was at the iconic Kangayan Lake, which necessitated a short hike uphill. Here, there was a viewing deck that provided an awe-inspiring view that is almost synonymous with Coron. After our downward trek, we emerged into the lake proper, with water so clear you can almost see the bottom with the naked eye. Travellers from across the world have also come here to experience it themselves.

Second, we stopped by Twin Lagoon, so named because the two lagoons are connected by a narrow gap through the mesmerising limestone cliffs. One can choose to swim in the clear waters (provided you have a life vest) or traverse them using a kayak. Either way, it is an extraordinary thing to drift along the waves while flanked by towering walls.

Lastly, we arrived at Atwayan Beach, a secluded cove with its own pristine beach. Here, we were delighted by grilled seafood and other Filipino favourites, perfect for enjoying the slowly sinking sun.

There’s plenty to adore with the refreshed Bacau Bay Coron. Araw Hospitality Group has steered it towards destination-driven experiences, with a refined set of accommodations and amenities that balances luxury with the comforts of home. It is precisely this intersection between nature, sophistication and genuine hospitality that defines this must-visit resort.
