Together with Chinese travel content creator Wang Houhou, we rediscover simple joys and moments of stillness at Alila Dong’ao Island Zhuhai
It was almost dusk when the picturesque South China Sea greeted as when we arrived at Alila Dong’ao Island Zhuhai—a seemingly endless sea, blurring the horizon into a wash of soft blues and greys. The ocean and the sky seemed to merge, as if the world had exhaled into stillness.
Travel content creator Wang Houhou, known for her thoughtful reflections on culture and personal growth, looked out toward the misty coastline and smiled. “There’s a quiet strength in stillness — a reminder that beauty doesn’t always have to dazzle,” she says.
Her partner, Li Doudou, a French animator with a poet’s gaze, nodded in agreement, watching the light shift across the restless waves.
They hadn’t come here to collect picture-perfect memories, but to embrace something gentler — to reconnect with each other, and with a slower, more contemplative rhythm of life.

Arrival in the wind
The journey begins with a 40-minute ferry ride from Zhuhai’s Hengqin Ferry Terminal to Dong’ao Island. The salty autumn breeze is cool, brushing softly against the skin. At the jetty, Alila’s shuttle awaits to take guests up a winding mountain road. The first glimpse of the resort — low, linear structures of stone cloaked in lush vegetation — feels organic, as though the buildings had grown naturally out of the rocks.
The lobby, with its vast glass façade, frames the seascape like a living artwork. Soft light filters through, falling on wooden tables and linen sofas. As the space glows with quiet warmth, it feels like nature and architecture breathe as one here.
The suites with ocean views at Alila Dong’ao Island Zhuhai continue this seamless dialogue. Each one opens to a horizon that feels alive, the sea constantly shifting in light and mood. Inside, the design is minimal but soulful — raw stone, dark wood and touches of green that blur the boundaries between indoors and out. Ferns and climbing vines spill over balconies, as if the natural world is gently reclaiming its space.
Then there’s the infinity pool carved into the cliff’s edge. Water overflows in a silent cascade, merging visually with the distant ocean. On grey days, the pool takes on a silvery calm, like fragments of clouds caught in still water. Wang and Li drift quietly to the pool’s edge, resting side by side as the wind stirs the surface.

Tea and time
Later, as dusk settles over the island, the couple retreat to their suite’s private tearoom, an unexpected sanctuary of ritual and reflection. Here, Li takes charge of brewing tea. His movements are deliberate: warming the pot, washing the leaves, pouring with precision. Across the table, Wang watches in silence, the air between them steeped in calm.
“This is how we find balance,” she says softly. “It doesn’t matter who brews the tea. What matters is that we both find comfort in the moment — just like this hotel, where Eastern tranquillity and Western modernity coexist so naturally.”
As night deepens, the sea outside continues its quiet rhythm. The wind still hums against the glass, but inside, everything feels perfectly still. Perhaps that is the quiet magic of Alila Dong’ao Island Zhuhai— it doesn’t promise escape, but return. A return to self, to connection, to the beauty of what’s real.
Because sometimes, the most meaningful journeys aren’t about chasing light, but about learning to find it in the grey.
