The aftermath of Mt. Pinatubo’s catastrophic eruption in 1991 brought significant change to its surrounding environment. The Mapanuepe and Maranella Rivers were blocked off and submerged nearby villages. Today, the area’s known as Mapanuepe Lake, and all that remains is the steeple of Bojaoen Church protruding from the water.

Though surrounded by a haunting history, the area is teeming with life and is home to lush green pastures, diverse fauna and flora, and a beautiful view.

There are no nearby hotels, so bring a tent if you plan on staying the night. The road can be treacherous for non-off-road vehicles, but an easier path is available; you just need to ride a boat.

If you’re looking for a place to lay a blanket on the grass and gaze at the stars, WK Forest Reserve & Campgrounds is your best bet. Seclusion is their most valued principle, so book your stay in advance.

Your adventure starts with a thrilling 4x4 ride to the campsite, and from there, you’re just a few hours away from seeing the Milky Way in its full glory.

Phone signal, electricity, and wifi are scarce, so make sure that all your affairs are in order before going off the grid!
