Diving offers freedom like no other. But if you want to push yourself to the limit, you might try your hand at freediving. Exploring a whole new world beneath the surface without relying on an oxygen tank is an unmatchable, thrilling experience. Just make sure you remember the number one rule: never dive alone. Check it out, and you might find a new go-to spot to take the plunge.

Panglao, Bohol

Dubbed the Freediving Capital of the Philippines, Panglao offers plenty of breathtaking underwater sights to explore. One place you shouldn’t miss is Napaling Reef, which is around eight meters deep from shore. Swim a bit further, and you’ll find a 25-metre drop—perfect for more experienced freedivers looking for a challenge. With schools of lively fish and walls of coral, it’s a sight to behold when you’re in Bohol.

Coron, Palawan

Many divers claim that Barracuda Lake is one of the best freediving spots you can visit in the Philippines. From underwater cliffs to crystal clear waters and mesmerising jagged rocks, underneath the surface looks and feels like another world. Despite its name, you won’t find many barracudas here. What makes it truly unique is its layered thermoclines. As you descend from the freshwater into the saltwater, you’ll notice that the temperature gets warmer.

Dinagat Islands

Situated west of Siargao, the Dinagat Islands is still off the beaten path (as of writing). While fish activity has been reported to be rare, you can easily spot sea snakes, shrimp, and nudibranchs thanks to the high visibility. Whip coral is also widespread here, alongside plenty of healthy soft and hard corals on the seabed.

Apo Reef, Occidental Mindoro

Considered the second largest atoll-like reef in the Philippines, the crystal-clear Apo Reef is home to over 285 species of marine life. The reef attracts thousands of divers yearly, from tropical aquarium fish and snappers to sea turtles and moray eels. There are two isolated reefs to explore, with a 30-metre-deep channel separating them, so spending the whole day here is recommended.

Moalboal, Cebu

Famous for its schools of silver sardines, Moalboal is the place to be if you want to be surrounded by marine life. The best part is you don’t even have to go too far from shore, and you can enjoy the sardine run from as shallow as three meters deep. Go deeper and find some history in the form of plane wrecks and statues.
