Did you know that some Olympians earn up to US$75 million in endorsement deals?

Being selected to join the Olympics is probably one of the greatest honours and achievements for any athlete and no matter if they win or not, the opportunity to represent your country on an international stage is often already a fantastic feat.

Of course, Olympic athletes don’t get paid to compete in the Olympic Games. Rather, many of them are sponsored by companies in endorsement deals that can often reach millions.

1. Kevin Durant - US$75 million

US basketball star Kevin Durant is one of the top players in the sport who plays for the Brooklyn Nets and is often referred to as the best player in the NBA. He has achieved three Olympic gold medals thus far. 

Durant has earned himself over US$75 million in his time in the sport as well as through setting up his own media network Boardroom, his stake in American professional football club Philadelphia Union, and his own venture capital firm.

2. Naomi Osaka - US$60 million

Naomi Osaka may only be 23 years old but the Japanese tennis star is already raking in US$55 million in endorsement deals and US$5 million in prize money.

Her endorsement partners include Google, Louis Vuitton and Levi’s. She has also starred on the cover of fashion magazines, released her own skincare line and had a swimsuit collaboration. 

Osaka is also ranked 12th on Forbes' highest-paid athletes’ list for 2021.

3. Damian Lillard - US$40.5 million

United States basketballer, Damian Lillard, may only be a first-time Olympian but his legacy as an NBA All-Star and Portland Trail Blazers player has already earned him endorsement deals with Adidas, Gatorade, Hulu and more.

Lillard has also managed to score a 10-year deal with Adidas that is worth US$100 million for his shoe line, Dame.

He has earned about US$40.5 million during his time in the sport and even pursued a career in rapping under the name of Dame Dolla. He has released three studio albums under a record label he founded himself, Front Page Music.

4. Novak Djokovic - US$34.5 million

No matter if you’re a tennis fan or not, the name Novak Djokovic is instantly recognisable. Djokovic is currently the world’s top-ranked tennis player and he has made over US$30 million through his endorsement deals with companies such as Lacoste, Peugeot, NetJets and more.

Though he recently exited the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games without a medal for the third Olympics in a row after losing the men’s singles bronze, he has done well enough for himself having made US$34.5 million to date.

5. Rory McIlroy - US$32 million

Rory McIlroy is a big name in the world of golf because of how decorated the professional golfer is. McIlroy is a four-time major champion and was also once ranked number one in the Official World Golf Ranking for 100 weeks straight. 

The Northern Ireland player has made a whopping US$29 million in earnings over the course of just 12 months thanks to his partnerships with Nike, Omega and more. He has also won millions in prize money including the US$15 million he won after winning the 2019 FedEx cup.

To date, he has earned about US$32 million (S$43.5 million).
