Heading to the slopes for the first time? Here’s all you need to know about renting your gear

While skiing and snowboarding are some of the most exciting winter activities to take part in, it’s also a costly sport—especially in terms of luggage space. A trip to the slopes means packing a fair bit of gear, from skis and poles to ski jackets and helmets. With so much to bring, it can be overwhelming if you have not been to the slopes before. So, if you would rather not lug your equipment to your destination, the next best alternative is to rent.

Fortunately, resorts and local ski shops tend to offer ski equipment rentals, making it easy for us to rent our gear. However, as not all rental shops carry the same equipment and accessories, it’s important to call ahead and check if what you need is in stock.

If it’s your first time renting gear, here are some things to look out for before doing so.

When renting boots, it’s important to find a pair that fits your feet well. There’s nothing worse than skiing with scrunched feet and blistered ankles. Pick a pair that will keep your ankles and feet fixed as it will help minimise the risk of injuries. If you will be wearing thick socks on the slopes, it’s better to choose a size slightly larger than your regular shoe size.  Find out if your boots fit by getting into a skiing position and ensure that there is no discomfort.

Ski sizes vary according to its use. For example, smaller skis will allow you to turn quickly, while larger skis will help with speed. In general, you should pick a ski that stands between your chin and the top of your head.

Similar to skis, snowboard sizes vary according to experience, expertise and style. Pick a board with a length that’s between your chest and mouth. When picking a board, don’t forget to consider its width too—make sure the board doesn’t leave your boots too exposed as it will be dragged against the snow.

Not all rental stores supply ski jackets and pants for rent. It is important to call ahead to check if there is any availability. It’s important to wear jackets and pants fit for the sport as these are typically waterproof or water-resistant, allowing you to stay dry if you fall. They also come insulated with snow-specific features.

When renting a helmet, pick one that is a good fit for your head. Your helmet should not be sliding backwards, especially when you shake your head. There should also not be any gaps between the helmet and your goggles, and your helmet lining and your head.

Other accessories such as gloves and goggles may not be available for rent, due to hygiene reasons. So, you will need to purchase them in advance.
