Where to go Skating? Manila Skate Park, Circuit Makati Skate Park, and More

No matter if you do inline skating, skateboarding, BMX, quad skating, or scooters, these skate parks are the place to be to practice your tricks

The word 'skating' can come to mean many things. It can refer to ice skating, inline or quad skating, skateboarding, and even BMX and kick scooters. While there are a few ice skating rinks in Metro Manila, skate parks and their locations don't seem to be common knowledge. The Philippines has a thriving skater community that is only growing after the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, where Skateboarding made its Olympic debut, and Margielyn Didal placed 7th in the women's street event. Now, skate parks are popping up all over the country and are becoming more popular with local skaters.

While it's newly recognised as a sport, it is more commonly known as a hobby or leisure activity, but in reality, it is so much more. It can be an all-around workout to keep you mentally and physically fit and train your spatial awareness, balance, and endurance.

When you're ready to put on a pair of skates or set off on a skateboard, here are a few skate parks that you can visit:

1. Manila Skate Park

Found just off Quirino Avenue Extension in Paco, Manila, the Manila Skate Park is an urban haven for skaters. Skaters can test their grinding skills on rails or do kickflips off four and five-step stairs. There are ramps for skaters who would like a bit more air time for their tricks and a lot of flat lands to practice on. A prominent feature of the Manila Skate Park is the large bowl, which had been long spray-painted with colourful and creative graffiti that shows the community's identity and love for the park.

2. Circuit Makati Skate Park

Located at Circuit Makati, this one-of-a-kind concrete skate park offers both beginners and advanced skaters an opportunity to test their skills. The skate park boasts a 1,000-sqm skate area and is designed with three skill levels in mind: beginner, intermediate, and professional skaters. Decked out with rails, mini-ramps, verts, and a bowl, skaters of all ages are sure to enjoy the adrenaline rush and skate the day away.

When interviewed after winning the gold medal in the Game of S.K.A.T.E event at the 30th Southeast Asian Games, skateboarder Margielyn Didal asked for more skateparks to be constructed. Spurred on by that plea, then-Mayor of Manila Isko Moreno renovated the Vitas Skate Park in the heart of Tondo, Manila, hoping it would inspire new skateboarding champions. It is a colourful park loaded with ramps, rails, slopes, and more, making it a perfect place for future sports medalists to practice. Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 lockdown of 2020, Vitas Skate Park had a rocky reopening which was halted for several months till the country's situation improved.

4. Alfspot

Tucked away at 1018 J Ramos Street Ibayo Tipas in Taguig, Alfsport is a small but beloved skatepark. What they lack in space, they make up for in gusto. With handmade rails painstakingly crafted and welded into the ground and a bowl that has seen the wheels of many boards, Alfspot attracts true skateboard enthusiasts from all around. They host skate jams regularly, where contestants' tricks are recorded and scored, and those with the best tricks go home with exclusive prizes and bragging rights.

5. RAVE Adventure Park

Along Legaspi Avenue, one can come across RAVE Rainforest Adventure Experience. It's a multi-use recreational spot in the heart of Pasig City and is actually a project of the local government. But if you're not in the mood for relaxing walks through nature or a boating trip on the lagoon and extreme sports are more your speed, the RAVE Adventure Park has what you need. With the tallest and longest zipline in Metro Manila, a wall for climbing and rappelling, and of course, the skate park, the Adventure Park section caters to all ages of sports junkies.
