Malaysian badminton men’s doubles Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik bag third place at Paris 2024

After defeating India’s Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty in the quarter-finals of Paris 2024 on August 1, Malaysian badminton men’s doubles Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik became one step closer to creating history for the country. It was a tough fight as the world No. 5 Indian pair and reigning Asian Games gold medalists had beaten them in straight games at their last three meetings.

The duo came back confidently on August 2 for the semi-final game against world No. 1 pair Liang Wei Keng and Wang Chang from China.

It was a nail-bitingly close game as Chia and Soh lost the first set 21-19 but came charging back in the second set winning 21-15, forcing the match to go into a rubber set. During which, Chia and Soh went all out to secure a spot in the Olympic men’s doubles badminton final for the first time ever in their career. They fought hard but unfortunately, lost 21-17 to the China pair.

Not going down without a fight, Chia and Soh challenged Denmark badminton pair Anders Skaarup Rasmussen and Kim Astrup to contend for a bronze medal on August 4 and pulled off a sensational 16-21, 22-20, 21-19 win to secure bronze for Malaysia.
