The finals saw the Singaporean kitefoiler Maximilian Maeder finishing third and winning a bronze medal
Singaporean kitefoiler Maximilian Maeder has won bronze at this year’s Paris Olympics, winning Singapore’s sixth Olympic medal since we first entered the Games in 1948. The finals saw him competing against Valentin Bontus, Toni Vodeski and Riccardo Pianosi where he finished third.
Maeder’s win is Singapore’s first medal at the Paris Olympics 2024, ending the nation’s eight-year wait for a medal, after swimmer Joseph Schooling won the country’s first and only gold at the Rio Olympics 2016.
In a Facebook post, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong congratulated Maeder on his win. Mr Wong added: “Thank you for our beautiful birthday gift to Singapore!”

Similarly, President Tharman Shanmugaratnam also took to Facebook to offer his congratulations. He said: “At 17, he’s the youngest individual sailing medal winner ever in the Olympics. Max is mature beyond his years—his teenage smile and traces of puppy fat are deceptive.”
The 17-year-old has been undefeated this year. Prior to the Olympics, he clinched gold at the men’s formula kite event at the 2024 Formula Kite World Championships, 2024 Semaine Olympique Francaise De Voile; 2024 World Cup Series and 2024 Formula Kite European Championships.
To quote our President, there is indeed a new wind in Singapore sports. Congratulations once again, Max!
