Every issue, we ask our cover star a round of rapid-fire questions that gives us a little more insight into their personalities. This month, Emma Raducanu serves up the answers
Favourite thing about Asia?
The people’s mindset. The ability and the drive to work really hard for your dreams and persevere through any setbacks and challenges really inspires me.
Favourite place in Asia?
Shenyang, my mum’s hometown. I spent summers there as a child growing up, so I have so many great memories from that region.
Favourite travel destination?
Anywhere in Southeast Asia or East Asia. I just love every part: I love the food, I love how modern they are, I love the buzz—everything about them.
Go-to comfort dish?
My comfort dish—my favourite dish [of all] probably—is Chinese-style scrambled egg and tomato [faan ke chao daan in Cantonese] and it’s really, really good. Whenever I feel sick or feel like a hearty meal, that’s my go-to.
Favourite artwork?
I am really into art right now, and in particular, this artist called Inam. I really like his Forest of Red, which I’ve been looking at in London.
Role model?
It has to be my mum. Her work ethic is something that she’s instilled in me from a young age; I definitely got that from her. She’s very strong and she is great at reading people, which I’ve also picked from her.
Life motto?
Something my mum always told me: <一步一步走>, which means to go step by step. When tasks or things seem daunting at first or like a big mountain, if you go step by step and look at the first thing in front of you, then hopefully things, over time, they aren’t as scary and difficult.
Proudest moment off the tennis court?
Getting my A-level results back and getting an A* in maths and A in economics. The last year during Covid, we still had to sit for more exams, and it [had been] difficult learning from home and on YouTube ... I was pretty proud of being able to get through everything these in the last six months.
Proudest moment on the tennis court?
100 per cent has to be when I won the US Open.
