Hong Kong is making sporting history as co-host of the 15th National Games of China from November 9 to 21, marking the first time the city has hosted this prestigious quadrennial event
Hong Kong’s sports scene has been buzzing in recent years. Think of swimmer Siobhan Haughey’s continued success at the Olympics, Edgar Cheung’s spectacular fencing victory at the Paris Olympics, Coleman Wong’s achievements at the US Open, and much more.
The city has successfully kept the momentum going, thanks to the 15th National Games, which are happening from November 9 to 21 across the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. No doubt, it will be another chance for the Hong Kong team to shine bright—and we’re rooting for them.

What are the National Games?

The National Games, officially known as the National Games of the People’s Republic of China, are a comprehensive sports event that uses Olympic events as its basic components. It has been held every four years since 1959 and is a highly anticipated sporting event in China.
The 2025 National Games is co-hosted by the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (Guangdong Province, Hong Kong, and Macao) for the first time. Hong Kong has been taking part in the National Games since 1997, but this marks the first time it will be hosting the event, making it a very special occasion for the city.
Hong Kong’s schedule for the National Games

The National Games will be held from November 9 to 21, featuring 34 competitive events and 23 mass participation events. Hong Kong will host eight events: cycling (track cycling and road cycling), golf, fencing, men’s handball, rugby sevens, beach volleyball, men’s U22 basketball and triathlon, as well as part of the athletics (marathon) route.
The events will be held at six venues: Kai Tak Sports Park, Central Harbourfront, Hong Kong Coliseum, the Hong Kong Golf Club at Fanling, Hong Kong Velodrome and Victoria Park.
National Games torch relay ceremony

The torch relay ceremony was held simultaneously in Hong Kong, Macao, Guangzhou and Shenzhen on November 2. The Hong Kong leg of the relay— Hong Kong table tennis player Wong Chun-ting being the first torchbearer—started at Tamar Park, passing through the Central and Western District promenade, the Wan Chai promenade and the Golden Bauhinia Square. Torchbearers then crossed Victoria Harbour by Star Ferry and took an open-top bus to Kai Tak Sports Park. Finally, the last torchbearer, female fencer Kaylin Hsieh, lit the cauldron at the Stadium’s central square. After the ceremony, representatives from the four cities returned the flame to Guangzhou.
How to watch the opening and closing ceremonies of the National Games?
The opening ceremony of the 15th National Games of China is scheduled for November 9 at the Guangdong Olympic Sports Centre Stadium in Guangzhou and the closing ceremony will be held on November 21 at Huan Le theatre at Bao’an district, Shenzhen. TVB will be broadcasting the entire event live, supporting the Hong Kong team across the city.

As one of the host cities for the 2025 National Games, Hong Kong has sent its largest delegation ever—a total of 602 athletes will compete in 28 events, including the men’s foil team led by Edgar Cheung Ka-long and Ryan Choi, swimmer Siobhan Haughey, and tennis star Coleman Wong.
