Sun Life celebrates the equestrian tradition of polo alongside an insightful economic forum

Legacy, though at times intangible, is something that is built and preserved—not just for us, but for those who come after: our children, families and loved ones. Sun Life recognises the importance of making sure that our hard-earned wealth can safely be left in their hands, which is why we should be well-equipped with the information we need to know. The Sun Life Polo Cup was one such instance: clients were able to learn valuable insights from market specialists while enjoying the thrills of polo.

During the accompanying economic forum, analysts and specialists provided meaningful and relevant market trends, such as geopolitical factors and prevailing investor sentiment, giving guests valuable insights to make better and more informed decisions. As the old adage goes, there are only two things certain in life: death and taxes.

The low-goal four-chukker match was won by the blue team, consisting of Warns, Marcos, Tengco and Gelosi, the latter of whom was recognised as the most valuable player (MVP). The high-goal five-chukker match, meanwhile, saw the white team victorious, consisting of de Jesus, Araneta, Romualdez and Constantino, who was also the MVP for the match.

“This is an opportunity for us to go beyond the transactions we’d normally have with [our clients],” Sun Life of Canada Philippines president, Sun Life CEO and country head JJ Moreno tells Tatler on the sidelines of the event. Fostering deeper relations outside of the usual finance talk is critical: it improves trust between them and their market managers, but also with the larger, like-minded community as a whole. “We’re also looking at golf tournaments in the future,” he hints.

“We understand that there are quite a lot of families or founders right now who have built wealth and would like to protect it, grow it and then transfer it,” Moreno adds. “That’s where we’re really anchoring our programmes around.”

Changing times require an equal change in strategy and perception. “We want to deepen client relationships,” Sun Life Chief distribution officer Al Quitangon remarks. “It’s not just knowing them, but understanding the changes in their lifestyle, the changes in values.”

Quitangon also outlines the three most important things that high-net-worth individuals are talking about today: legacy planning, risk management and succession planning. The latter, he explains, is more relevant now than ever. “It’s about making sure that these established businesses—your businesses—[continue],” he explains, “But how do you make sure that these are passed on successfully?”

“Succession planning is a process wherein the business continues even at the death of the originator,” he elaborates. “Because if there’s no [plan], then the business stops.”

As a 130-year-old institution, Sun Life is no stranger to continuity. Through the years, it has built its reputation and earned trust by nurturing longstanding relationships with its clients. “Your legacy is our business,” Moreno remarks. “We deal with you holistically," Quitangon adds. "Not only on one segment, but every need that we can cover.”
