The 2024 Range Rover Velar combines sleek looks, comfort, technology and performance seamlessly and effortlessly.

Let’s be honest: most of us city-dwellers in Singapore don’t buy SUVs with the intention of taking them off-roading at the weekend. Considering the investment involved in purchasing a car, it’s unlikely we’ll drive across the border in search of muddy trails and steep hills to test the ruggedness and capabilities of these vehicles. More often than not, our choice of an SUV is motivated by other factors.

Perhaps it’s the elevated driving position or the sense of security in what we perceive as a sturdier, safer vehicle. Or maybe it’s the combination of space and image—an SUV exudes a more masculine aura than a minivan. The former suggests a (weekend) warrior, while the latter implies a soccer mom. In reality, we’re more likely to be navigating—or inching along—the PIE or CTE in our SUVs than traversing through forests or deserts.

This is precisely why there’s a definite market for the luxury SUV, especially here.

The new Velar introduces a refreshed appearance with its updated grille design, sleek lighting enhancements, and a stylish rear bumper, complemented by sophisticated, darker exterior trim. Inside, the Velar boasts the latest in infotainment with an 11.4-inch curved touchscreen, offering advanced technology at your fingertips. The Velar also presents a novel upholstery choice—a chic blend of wool and polyurethane, marrying luxury with eco-friendly materials.

To enhance cabin tranquility, the Velar features an advanced active noise-cancellation system. Additionally, the optional Cabin Air Purification Plus system now incorporates a carbon dioxide sensor, reducing driver fatigue.

The base engine for the Velar, the P250, is a 247-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder. It delivers refined performance, providing the necessary agility for quick lane changes or overtaking those pesky slow drivers hogging the far right lane. There is a more powerful P400 variant, with a 395-hp turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six, but that is currently not available here.

The Velar’s handling is smooth and responsive. It quickly becomes a familiar drive, ensuring a comfortable experience for the driver. Models with optional air suspension provide added versatility, allowing ride height adjustments for dynamic on-road performance or easier off-road navigation. This feature can also automatically lower the vehicle when parked or when a door is opened, epitomising luxury and comfort in the automotive experience.

The interior of the Velar is designed with a minimalist aesthetic. The central feature is the infotainment touchscreen, which consolidates most controls. This means that most functions are accessed through this central panel. The touchscreen is equipped with Land Rover’s Pivi Pro system, which offers a more intuitive and responsive user experience compared to the previous InControl Touch Pro system. Standard features include Bluetooth connectivity, voice control, a high-quality Meridian stereo system, built-in navigation, and seamless integration with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, ensuring a harmonious blend of modern technology and convenience.

Introduced in 2018, the Velar is a midsize, 5-seater SUV positioned between the Range Rover Evoque and the Range Rover Sport. Land Rover’s lineup also includes the Discovery brand SUVs, which are more off-road and family-oriented. The Velar, under the slightly more upscale Range Rover brand, has always emphasized elegance and sophistication, prioritizing superior on-road performance and ride quality, making it an ideal choice for those seeking luxury and functionality.

For the latest model year, the Velar features a newly designed grille, accompanied by slender pixel headlights, each containing 268 LEDs for optimal road illumination and reduced glare for oncoming traffic. At the rear, the Velar showcases redesigned LED tail lights above a new bumper and a revised diffuser insert, notably excluding exhaust finishers.

The exterior colour options for the Velar have been expanded with the introduction of Metallic Varesine Blue and Premium Metallic Zadar Grey, further enhancing its visual appeal. The darker trim pieces create a striking contrast, and the vehicle now comes with new wheel designs in various finishes, adding to its sophisticated and contemporary look.

Ultimately, this is a car you'll choose partly because it looks exceptionally good. It drives well, features impressive technology for a more comfortable ride, and boasts beautifully designed interiors that radiate luxury. And, of course, it looks sleek and stylish, particularly in your driveway.
