Octopus cards in Hong Kong can now be integrated with iPhones and Apple Watches, allowing users to use Apple Pay to top up and pay

As of June 2, Apple released a new iOS update that has – at last – made it possible for Octopus cards to be integrated with Apple products. Once updated, users can add their Octopus account to their Apple Wallet, enabling them to pay at numerous outlets across the city via Apple Pay.
Using Octopus cards on Apple devices is just like using the physical card, meaning that users simply need to tap their iPhone or Apple Watch to an Octopus reader to complete a transaction. Just like when using other cards integrated with Apple Pay, either a password, fingerprint scan or Face ID is needed for authentication.
The new digital Octopus cards can be used on trains, buses, ferries and in numerous retail businesses across Hong Kong, and the update is compatible with iPhone 8 models and newer, and Apple Watch Series 3 and newer.
To set up your Octopus card on Apple products, all you have to do is update your device to latest version of iOS or watchOS to get started, then follow the instructions to transfer your current Octopus card or add a new card.
As well as making it convenient to pay, the integration allows for effortless top ups via your Apple Wallet. The new function also allows you to keep track of transaction history and balance. Top ups can be made digitally using any Hong Kong-issued bank or credit card, or by using cash at any 7-Eleven or MTR Customer Service Centre.
Those worried about any security risks can put their mind at ease, as the integration offers peace of mind. Using Octopus with Apple Pay isn't just more convenient than your physical card – it's safer, too. If your iPhone or Apple Watch is ever lost or stolen, you can use the Find My app to easily put your iPhone or Apple Watch in Lost Mode and suspend Apple Pay. You can also remove your cards remotely on iCloud.com.
As an added bonus, as part of the update, Hong Kong MTR and bus routes have also been added to Apple Maps, with users now able to ask Siri for directions in Cantonese or English.
