50 years ago, the world was treated to an outrageous supercar by Lamborghini called the Countach. Today, we witness its resurrection as a limited production homage of just 112 examples

Lamborghini has an illustrious history dating back to 1963 and has produced many iconic supercars. Perhaps the most iconic, the Miura, was revisited as a concept model in 2006 but it never made it into production largely due to Lamborghini’s production capability back then. However, things have changed at Lamborghini as the marque's production skills and flexibility have vastly improved over the past decade.

Several of the more significant concept cars became limited production models, beginning with the Reventon and Sesto Elemento, each delivered with audacious styling and features, not to mention with outrageous price tags as well.

This year, Lamborghini launched their latest limited production model, the Countach LPI 800-4 as an homage to the original that appeared 50 years ago. Back in the late 1970s, the original Countach was the pin-up car for many a teenager and Lamborghini decided for its 50th anniversary that it should transform the legend into reality.

“The engineering team that developed the original Countach helped advance Lamborghini’s pioneering technical approach, delivering unexpected innovations and the best performance available in a production car,” says Lamborghini Chief Technology Officer Maurizio Reggiani. “That spirit inherently drives Lamborghini R&D, resulting in the pioneering hybrid technology in the LPI 800-4, and the emotive driving experience and top-line performance expected from a flagship V12 Lamborghini.”

The original began life with a 379hp 3.9-litre V12 but the new version has a total of 814hp of combined power as it is a hybrid 6.5-litre V12 power plant. Power is delivered to all the wheels via a permanent all-wheel-drive system. Using the traction afforded by all four tyres gives the Countach immense acceleration, leaping to 100 km/h from standstill in just 2.8 seconds, reaching 200 km/h in 8.6 seconds and topping out at an incredible 355 km/h.

Its construction is far removed from the steel and fiberglass of its progenitor being made entirely of carbon fibre from head to tail. Thanks to Mitja Borkert, head of Centro Stile, the design is thoroughly modern but takes iconic styling cues from the original, such as the angled cut wheel arches, slit-form headlamps triangular side ducts and gill-like slats just aft of the side windows.

“The Countach LPI 800-4 is a visionary car of the moment, just as its forerunner was,” says Automobili Lamborghini President and CEO Stephan Winkelmann. “As one of the most important automotive icons, the Countach not only embodies the design and engineering of Lamborghini but represents our philosophy of reinventing boundaries, achieving the unexpected and extraordinary and, most importantly, being the ‘stuff of dreams’.

True to his words, despite the US$2.64 million price tag (before taxes or registration fees) and if you have not as yet signed a purchase agreement for one of these—it will sadly have to remain a dream as all 112 cars have found owners. Such is the reality of limited-edition cars.
