Hybrid vehicles are nothing new. In fact, the gasoline engine paired with an electric motor has become quite a popular choice in helping to give motorsts the best of both worlds. So popular, in fact, that almost all car manufacturers have at least one hybrid model in their lineup. This begs the question: which vehicles are the must-have hybrids? While we can name a dozen or so offerings, let’s narrow down our choices to three. These hybrids, if you will note, each represent a certain segment in the automotive landscape. While they may be identical to their non-hybrid siblings, they do give that extra margin of efficiency especially in the urban jungle.

1. Lexus RX450h

We all know Lexus as a maker of some of the most refined and luxurious automobiles in the business. And the RX450h, despite being a crossover, is no exception. The styling is cutting-edge and the interior is typical premium Lexus. The good news here, however, is that you get a 3.5-litre V6 paired with a permanent synchronous electric motor that allows you to drive in full electric mode or get added boost when the pace picks up. It’s luxury and efficiency wrapped in one svelte package.

2. Porsche Panamera 4 E-Hybrid

There once was a time when being sporty and caring for the environment were two totally different things. Nowadays, cars like the four-door Porsche Panamera with a 2.9-litre bi-turbo V6 mated to an electric motor allow you to have your cake and eat it too. You can zip from 0-100kph in about 4.4 seconds and still go on full electric mode for up to 50kms. This being a Porsche, sporty driving is of course part of the equation, helped in no small part by tremendous grip from all-wheel drive. Oh, and let’s not forget that you’re riding in the lap of luxury.

3. Toyota Prius

What’s a hybrid vehicle story without the Toyota Prius? While there are a host of hybrids out there, this car was the purveyor of such mass-produced offerings and gave motorists the best of both worlds without necessarily burning a hole in their pocket. Its latest iteration gives us a 1.8-litre gasoline mill coupled to the latest electric powerplant. This car, as with other hybrids, allows you to run on full electric power for roughly 50kms yet get decent performance when the need calls for it. And it actually looks less like a science project now and has a sleek appearance to boot.

Of course, there are other hybrids out there. But for us who live in the Pearl of the Orient, this is what we can get if we want to care for the environment while going about our daily motoring lives.
