A look at overlooked iPhone features that can streamline navigation and reveal tools already hidden in plain sight

The iPhone is known for its simplicity, but it also includes functions many users never notice. These features are tucked away in menus, the Control Centre and accessibility settings, often appearing only by chance. Exploring these lesser-known iPhone features can speed up routine tasks and give you more control over daily use. They are not hidden, but Apple rarely draws attention to them. Knowing how to access and use these iPhone features can help you get more from the device without third-party apps or extra steps, offering practical improvements in navigation, audio and text input.

1. Back Tap for shortcuts

Back Tap turns the rear of the device into a programmable surface. Go to Settings > Accessibility > Touch > Back Tap and assign an action to a double or triple tap. Options range from taking a screenshot to toggling the Torch or running a Shortcut. It is a discreet way to trigger tools when the screen is busy or when one-handed use is easier.

2. Sound Recognition alerts

Sound Recognition monitors for specific environmental cues such as alarms, doorbells or crying. Open Settings > Accessibility > Sound Recognition to enable it and choose the sounds you want flagged. The phone processes this on the device, then sends a notification when it detects a match. It is particularly useful in noisy environments or when your phone is out of sight.

3. Built-in Magnifier

The Magnifier acts like a digital loupe using the camera’s live feed. Enable it through Settings > Accessibility > Magnifier and add it to Control Centre for quicker access. Once open, you can zoom, freeze the view or apply filters for better clarity. It is practical for reading small print, checking labels or examining surfaces with more precision.

4. Hidden keyboard trackpad

The keyboard can double as a trackpad for finer text control. Press and hold the space bar until the keys fade, then glide your finger to move the cursor. You can refine placement without repeatedly tapping the screen, which helps when editing paragraphs or adjusting text in narrow fields.

5. System-wide text replacement

Text Replacement automates common phrases and reduces repetitive typing. Go to Settings > General > Keyboard > Text Replacement, create a shortcut and pair it with the full phrase. Typing the shortcut in any app expands it instantly. It is useful for email signatures, repeated instructions or names you type frequently.

6. Level tool in the Measure app

The Measure app includes a functional digital level. Open Measure and select the Level tab to check if surfaces are aligned. The interface displays tilt by degree and highlights when the phone is perfectly balanced. It is accurate enough for hanging frames or checking shelves without keeping a separate tool.

7. Visual Look Up for objects

Visual Look Up analyses your photos for identifiable subjects. Open a photo, tap the information icon and look for a symbol indicating additional detail. If recognised, you will see options for related information and categories. It works best with clear, well-lit images and provides quick reference without switching apps.

8. Optimised Battery Charging

This feature aims to reduce battery ageing by adjusting charging behaviour. Turn it on through Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging. When active, the phone charges normally until roughly 80 per cent, then waits to finish charging based on your usage patterns. It helps keep the battery in better condition over long-term use.

9. Silence unknown callers

Silence Unknown Callers sends calls from numbers not in your contacts directly to voicemail. Enable it via Settings > Phone > Silence Unknown Callers. You still receive voicemail messages and missed-call logs, but without interruption. It can reduce unwanted calls without blocking legitimate ones entirely.

10. Accessibility Shortcut triple-click

The side button can be configured as a quick launcher for accessibility tools. Go to Settings > Accessibility > Accessibility Shortcut, select one or more options, then triple-click the side button to toggle them. It works system-wide and provides immediate access to tools like Colour Filters or AssistiveTouch.

11. Hidden album in Photos

iOS lets you hide photos and videos from the main library. Select a photo, tap Share > Hide. Hidden items move to the Hidden album, which can itself be hidden in Settings > Photos for extra privacy.

12. Precise volume control

Instead of tapping the volume buttons repeatedly, press and hold them for finer adjustments. On iOS 16 and later, you can also drag the on-screen volume slider in Control Centre for exact increments.

13. Custom vibration patterns

Create unique vibration alerts for contacts or notifications. Go to Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Ringtone > Vibration > Create New Vibration. You can tap your own rhythm, making it easier to identify callers silently.

14. Hidden Safari search functions

Long-press the reload button in Safari to reload a page without content blockers, or pull down the address bar to reveal search shortcuts for quick access to Google, Apple Maps or Wikipedia.

15. QR code scanning from Control Centre

While QR codes can be scanned via the Camera app, you can add a dedicated QR scanner to Control Centre for faster access. Go to Settings > Control Centre > add QR Code Reader, then tap it from anywhere to scan instantly.

A closer look at these iPhone features shows how many practical tools sit in the background of the system. Knowing where they are and how they work makes the device more flexible without changing how you already use it.
