From the challenging terrain of Kaohsiung to the spirit of the Defender Trophy, this journey not only showcased the capabilities of off-road vehicles but also revealed the power of teamwork and moving forward together.

Many journeys begin with a destination, but sometimes they start with a simple question: How ready are we to step out of our comfort zone?

Amidst the diverse landscapes of Kaohsiung and the surrounding southern Taiwan, Tatler participated in the 2026 Asia Pacific Defender Media Experience. This regional driving experience brought us up close to the Defender 110 Trophy Edition through a journey not designed for typical test drives, but rather to rekindle the spirit of the Defender Trophy competition, reviving a new chapter in the global off-road legend.

A competition among representatives from across the region.

Defender Trophy is a global adventure competition that's not just about speed, but a test of driving, navigation, wit, problem-solving, physical strength, and most importantly, teamwork. Participants face seemingly impossible missions in challenging terrain, where every decision matters, and the winner is the team that proves the power of cooperation and the true spirit of adventure.

For the Asia-Pacific region, the qualifying rounds were held in Taiwan, with 24 contestants from seven key markets: Hong Kong, Indonesia, New Zealand, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. They participated in two days of challenges to compete for the chance to represent the region in the Global Final, which will be linked to a conservation partnership with Tusk, a wildlife and biodiversity conservation organization in Africa.

Even though, as media, we didn't get to compete on the field like the actual contestants, we experienced challenging mini-challenges that clearly captured the essence of the Defender Trophy. These included missions requiring precise team communication, accurate driving distance estimation, and the use of vehicles to solve engineering problems, all under the pressure of time and space constraints. The crucial element of teamwork and trust were the guiding principle of this adventure.

Therefore, what's more important than "What can this car do?" is collaboratively finding the answer within the team: "How can we best utilize its potential?"

Adventure and trust

The Defender 110 Trophy Edition undeniably became a key image of the trip. Its striking Deep Sandglow Yellow color, contrasting beautifully with Taiwan's landscape, is not merely eye-catching but also reflects the legendary off-road racing history that has taken Land Rover and Defender to extreme terrains around the world. Meanwhile, the classic Keswick Green elegantly conveys the timeless charm of the Defender.

Beyond its external appearance, the core of this type of vehicle lies in its practicality. Every component and function is designed to handle unpredictable journeys, from wading through water and climbing narrow, steep inclines to navigating challenging terrain. This requires torque, precision, and delicate control, making the experience far more multifaceted than a typical test drive of a new car.

This adventure showed us that the Defender isn't just built for rugged toughness; it also prioritizes driver comfort and a sense of security within the cabin, even on rough terrain filled with dust, sand, gravel, mud, steep inclines, and off-road conditions. The Terrain Response system adapts to every road surface, and technologies like Adaptive Off-Road Cruise Control make tackling unfamiliar terrain more accessible than expected, strongly reinforcing the idea that adventure isn't always defined by hardship.

Ultimately, the 2026 Asia Pacific Defender Media Experience in Kaohsiung was not just about unveiling the capabilities of the 2026 Defender or previewing the Defender 110 Trophy Edition; it was a reminder that the legend of the Defender never stops in the past, but continues to be written through people who dare to embark on journeys, dare to face uncertainty, and dare to trust both their teammates and the potential of the vehicle to take them forward and further than ever before.
