1. Yerin Ha came from an acting family

Yerin Ha was born on January 16, 1998, in Sydney, Australia. Her family is deeply rooted in the performing arts. Her grandmother, Son Sook, is a renowned Korean actress and radio host. Son has won the Baeksang Arts Award three times; she also had a special appearance on the Arthdal Chronicles. Moreover, her parents met during their time at acting school. This rich artistic heritage influenced Ha’s decision to pursue acting from a young age.

2. She shuttles back to Korea now and then

At 15, Ha moved to South Korea to attend the Kaywon High School of Arts in Seoul, undergoing intensive training that honed her craft. She later returned to Australia to complete a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Musical Theatre at the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) in Sydney, graduating in 2018. She still visits Korea often—and was even in Seoul when she found out she got the part.

3. Ha was having breakfast when she found out she was cast

Ha and her mom were in a café in Gangnam when she got the role. She stepped out to take the call and when her mother saw her jumping on the street, she immediately knew what it was about. Ha said her mother went after her, crying, and said, “We’ve got to go home. I think I have indigestion.” She later FaceTimed her closest friends who were just as excited that she was now part of such an iconic and revolutionary series.

4. She’s worked with Steven Spielberg

Ha’s television debut came with a recurring role in the 2019 series Reef Break. She gained further recognition portraying Kwan Ha in the Paramount+ series Halo (2022–2024), a role that showcased her versatility and depth as an actress. Halo was executive-produced by Steven Spielberg. Before Bridgerton, she also starred in the Stan miniseries Bad Behaviour (2023), further solidifying her presence in the industry.

5. She is an advocate for diversity in media

Ha has been vocal about the importance of diverse representation in film and television. She emphasises the need for audiences to see multifaceted characters from various backgrounds, moving beyond stereotypes to portrayals that resonate with authenticity and depth.

While Bridgerton has featured East Asian actresses in smaller, supporting roles, Ha’s casting blows the door wide open for bigger East Asian roles. Katie Leung (who played Cho Chang in Harry Potter) will play Lady Araminta Gun, the “evil stepmother” in this Cinderella iteration; Michelle Mao and Isabella Wei will portray her daughters.

6. She dabbles in different art forms and interests

Beyond acting, Ha has showcased her versatility by participating in stage productions, such as playing Maurice in a 2019 adaptation of Lord of the Flies at Sydney’s Roslyn Packer Theatre. She also appeared as a dancer in the music video for “I Gotta Have You” by Fluir and Jesse Marantz. In her personal time, Ha enjoys painting, music, yoga and travelling. She's even been to the Philippines.

She is also an avid fan of the online fantasy game MapleStory.
