‘Pursuit of Jade’ didn’t make Zhang Linghe—it revealed him to a wider audience
Zhang Linghe is an engineer-turned-actor who is quickly rewriting C-drama stardom.
Although he debuted in 2020 and has starred in popular Chinese TV shows, such as Love Between Fairy and Devil (2022) and Story of Kunning Palace (2023), it was his role in the mega hit Pursuit of Jade (2026) that propelled him to the A-list.
Within a week of release, Pursuit of Jade crossed the 10,000 “heat index” mark on iQIYI, a benchmark reserved for bona fide blockbusters, while also debuting on Netflix’s Global Top 10 for non-English shows. Zhang, long admired but not yet fully claimed by the mainstream, suddenly found himself repositioned as a defining face of the prestige-era C-drama.
Even more interesting? He was this close to not pursuing stardom. In an alternate universe, he would have been an electrical engineer. Can’t get enough of this 28-year-old sensation? Here are more fun facts about him.

1. Zhang Linghe is a big brain
Before scripts and camera marks, Zhang Linghe was surrounded by equations. Born Zhang Jiawei in Wuxi, Jiangsu, on December 30, 1997, Zhang studied electrical engineering at Nanjing Normal University after reportedly scoring 182 out of 200 in math on the Gaokao, China’s national college entrance examination. He joined the university’s Aerospace Society, with interests that leaned more toward physics than performance.
His entry into entertainment came via a talent scout in 2019—a pivot that reads less like a leap of faith and more like a change in application. The analytical mindset never left; it simply found a new medium.
2. Zhang Linghe has undergone a 100-kilogram transformation
Long before he became synonymous with tailored robes and immaculate styling, Zhang Linghe underwent a physical reset of his own.
In 2018, during his university years, he weighed close to 100 kg. After a moment of recognition—or lack thereof—when a friend failed to recognise him, he committed to a drastic transformation: losing 25 kg in four months through daily running and a strict, almost ascetic diet.
3. He has become a luxury fixture
By 2026, Zhang Linghe isn’t just a leading man. He’s a fashion fixture.
He has secured ambassador roles with Bulgari and is associated with a portfolio of luxury houses, including Gucci, Chopard and Lancôme. The transition feels seamless, largely because his screen persona already aligns with what these brands value: composure, elegance and a kind of quiet authority.
He doesn’t sell the image. He fits into it.

4. Fans have dubbed him ‘Foundation General’
It’s less about vanity than consistency. Even in high-intensity, dust-heavy battle scenes, Zhang’s appearance remains strikingly composed—an almost ironic contrast to the chaos around him. The nickname has since evolved into shorthand for his broader appeal: controlled, polished, unshakeable.
5. He is a workhorse
Zhang Linghe is always in pursuit of the perfect work ethic.
While filming the upcoming drama The Road to Glory, Zhang had a couple of medical emergencies. During a high-intensity fight scene, he experienced mild hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). His agency attributed this to intense physical exertion and insufficient sugar intake. Viral clips recorded him unable to get up from the ground and assisted by co-star Jelly Lin and crew members.
The following afternoon, Zhang experienced significant pain in his left leg. A specialist diagnosed it as a muscle strain. Subsequent hospital examinations confirmed no other serious issues, though doctors advised him to minimise movement on that leg.
Moreover, early in production, Zhang accidentally hit his head with the hilt of his prop sword during a fight scene. Despite visible pain, he resumed filming after a brief pause.
Commitment? Yes.
6. He plays games during his down time
Zhang Linghe has described himself as an introvert. He is someone who prefers staying in on his rare days off, often playing video games. He’s an avid e-sports fan and has even participated in a Valorant exhibition match. This detail is an unexpected but telling contrast to his increasingly polished public image.
It’s this duality—precision on-screen, low-key off-screen—that makes him feel less constructed than most.
7. Zhang Linghe is well-known for helping in disaster relief
Unlike many celebrity-led charitable efforts, Zhang Linghe’s contributions tend to surface after the fact.
He has donated to disaster relief efforts, including the 2025 Tibet earthquake and a major Hong Kong fire, through the Han Hong Charity Foundation. The details are rarely foregrounded, which, in an industry that often amplifies generosity, becomes notable in itself.
8. He makes an effort for the environment
In April 2026, Zhang Linghe expanded his public role beyond entertainment. He became an ambassador for WildAid and participated in the documentary series The Answer is Earth, which explores green energy and low-carbon transitions in China.
It’s a move that aligns with his broader image: thoughtful, measured and increasingly global in scope.
9. Fans have noted his picture-perfect handwriting
Xie Zheng does a lot of calligraphy in Pursuit of Jade, and—unsurprisingly—art imitates life. Eagle-eyed fans were quick to zero in on Zhang Linghe’s penmanship, noting how clean, balanced and consistent his strokes are, with some even comparing screenshots of his writing to printed script fonts circulating online. It’s the kind of detail that could easily have been faked with a body double or post-production inserts, but the production leans into authenticity, letting the camera linger on his hand as he writes—turning what could have been background action into a subtle extension of character.
