A recent study of Spotify data reveals two songs by Ed Sheeran among the most popular love songs in playlists on the streaming platform
Ever wondered what the most streamed love song was on Spotify? A recent study by the team at QR code generating platform QRFY used the Spotify tool Playlist Miner to identify the top 1,000 playlists containing ‘love songs’ in the title, analysing them to find the most occurring songs.
The results saw Ed Sheeran’s Perfect topping the list, with 2.7 billion streams worldwide and occurring in 129 times in playlists. The song was also found to be the second most popular in wedding playlists, appearing in the top 100 hits. John Legend’s No. 1 hit All Of Me came in second, with 120 occurrences in playlists titled ‘love songs’ and also featuring consistently across wedding playlists—hardly a surprise since Legend reportedly performed the heartfelt ballad at his wedding with Chrissy Teigen.

James Arthur’s 2016 hit Say You Won’t Let Go came in third place, featuring in 98 playlists and amassing over 2.6 billion streams globally, followed by the Arctic Monkeys’ I Wanna Be Yours, which occurred 77 times across the playlists with over 1.8 billion plays. In fifth place, Sheeran’s Thinking Out Loud featured 76 times in playlists, being the third most common song featured in wedding playlists on Spotify. With over 2.4 billion streams globally, Thinking Out Loud didn’t reach the number one spot in the US when it came out, though it did in the UK.
Richard Marx’s 1989 classic Right Here Waiting saw 74 features in playlists, while the late Whitney Houston’s powerhouse vocals in I Will Always Love You made their way to the top played songs as well in seventh place. Foreigner’s I Want to Know What Love Is features 62 times, the eighth most romantic love song.
Next in popularity was Peter Cetera's iconic 80s song Glory of Love (featured most memorably in Karate Kid Part II), which came up around 64 times across love song playlists, followed by Ruth B's feel-good 2017 hit Dandelions, which secured over 1.3 billion global streams.

Though shy of a billion streams on Spotify, Calum Scott’s You Are The Reason deserves a mention, with 60 occurrences across playlists. Other popular hits that missed the top spots were Bruno Mars’ Just the Way You Are, Phil Collins’s Against All Odds (Take a Look at Me Now) and George Michael’s iconic Careless Whisper, all with over 50 occurrences in ‘love songs’ playlists.
