As the private bathroom evolves into a sanctuary for personal wellbeing, GROHE SPA reimagines the master suite through tailored water rituals, artisanal materials and architectural precision

Luxury is increasingly defined by the quality of everyday experiences. In contemporary residences across Asia, the master suite is no longer conceived solely as a place to retreat at the end of the day, but as a private environment designed to restore both body and mind. At its heart lies the bathroom, reimagined as an Aqua Sanctuary where water, light, texture and sound work in harmony to create moments of personal renewal.

This evolving perspective was brought to life at GROHE SPA's Aqua Sanctuary showcase at Nai Lert Park in Bangkok on 24 September 2026. First presented at Milan Design Week earlier in the year, the latest collections arrived in Southeast Asia through an immersive experience for architects, interior designers, developers and media from across the region. Rather than presenting bathroom fittings as individual objects, the showcase explored how water, design and technology could come together to form a more personal approach to wellbeing.

The experience unfolds across three distinct sanctums, each exploring a different dimension of the bathroom as a restorative space. The first drew inspiration from light and nature. Suspended above a circular basin, the Rainshower Icon 3D concept shower evokes the branches of a tree, allowing water to descend like rainfall through a forest canopy. An Oculus skyscape overhead shifted from dawn to dusk, introducing a changing relationship between light and the passage of time. Complementing the installation was the GROHE SPA Icon 3D faucet, another conceptual exploration of sculptural form and water delivery. Created through metal additive 3D printing, these designs consider how organic shapes and specialized streams, including laminar flows and fountain sprays, might introduce new sensory dimensions to the bathing experience.

The second sanctum turned its attention to materiality and the importance of visual continuity. At its center was the GROHE SPA Atrio Private Collection, presented in an array of finishes and complemented by interchangeable Caesarstone quartz handles. The setting also introduced the collaboration between GROHE SPA and London-based design studio Buster + Punch, extending a consistent design language across taps, hardware and lighting. Four coordinated finishes—Brushed Warm Sunset, Brushed Cool Sunrise, Supersteel and Phantom Black—demonstrate how even the smallest details can contribute to a cohesive architectural composition. The intention is to allow fixtures and fittings to relate naturally to the materials and finishes surrounding them, creating a bathroom that feels considered as a whole.

The third sanctum was dedicated to the rituals of preparation, relaxation and rejuvenation, with three spaces illustrating how a bathroom might be tailored to different moments of the day. Allure Gravity fittings in Phantom Black were paired with Caesarstone Vanilla Noir, while modular Rainshower Aqua Tiles provided an overhead water experience. Concealed Grohtherm smart controls kept the technical elements discreet, allowing the design to retain its visual clarity. Interchangeable glass and quartz cover plates, together with the GROHE Colors range, further demonstrate the possibilities for personalisation. Here, the emphasis was not on prescribing a single ideal of wellbeing, but on giving homeowners and designers the freedom to create an environment that reflects individual preferences.

Behind these carefully composed spaces lies a flexible technical framework. Modular components and concealed controls give architects greater freedom to configure the bathroom without allowing mechanical complexity to dominate the design. This balance between engineering and discretion is central to GROHE SPA's approach: technology should enhance the experience quietly, rather than compete with the atmosphere it helps create.

That philosophy extended into the evening's discussion, The Curated Sanctuary, which brought together Antoine Besseyre des Horts, Leader of Global Design, Asia at LIXIL; Peter Tay, founder and director of Peter Tay Studio; Paula O'Callaghan of Hirsch Bedner Associates; Jan Henderson of Indesign Media Asia Pacific; and Duc Patrick Nguyen of Accor. Their conversation considered how the definition of luxury is shifting away from status and material display towards time, personal meaning and a greater sense of well-being. The bathroom, as one of the home's most private spaces, was identified as an increasingly important setting for this change. Designers are responding with more considered amenities, from twin showers and integrated benches to Japanese-style soaking tubs residential designed for two.

The discussion also underscored the role of technology and sustainability in shaping the future of residential design. Rather than making technology a visible feature, the panellists favored systems that operate quietly in the background, supporting comfort without interrupting the experience. Sustainability, meanwhile, was regarded not as a passing design trend, but as an increasingly fundamental responsibility of the industry.

For those seeking to translate these ideas into their own projects, GROHE SPA's portfolio can be experienced at LIXIL Experience Centers in South Jakarta, Central Jakarta, Bandung and Bali, where live-water installations and one-to-one design consultations offer a closer look at the possibilities.

Ultimately, the Aqua Sanctuary reflects a broader evolution in contemporary living: the understanding that wellbeing needs not be reserved for occasional escapes. It can be woven into the architecture of the home, through the considered use of water, materials, light and technology. With thoughtful design, even the most familiar daily rituals can become opportunities to pause, reset and reconnect.
